Jin Kazama vs Hiei | PREDICTION BLOG

Jin Kazama, the Child of Destiny.

Hiei, the master of the Evil Eye.

The blood of the devil is not an easy thing to live with. Whether you choose to embrace it or repress it, that kind of power will find a way to change you. Many have unfortunately fallen down a darker path, becoming the monster everyone thought they were. But for these two, even if they walked a fine line for a time, they’ve found a life worth living as themselves. At peace with their past and friends to care for, they’ve learned to fight for what they hold dear, no matter what their cursed blood holds. But between these two, which devil here is truly the strongest?

Before We Begin

This was planned ahead of Ichigo vs Yusuke being announced and released. The coincidence is both strange and welcomed.

In terms of what we decided to use for this blog, it is… more complicated than you might expect? While Tekken’s main core of canon is pretty straightforward, an issue arose in what specific spin-offs and adaptations were considered in line with that canon and thus were usable. So, to cover all bases, we took a look at every single piece of Tekken media and included everything that fell in line with the original games canon for Jin.

A similar thing could be said for YuYu Hakusho. Whilst the easy thing to do would be going solely by the original manga, the anime and movies add additional context and lore to the story that would be ignorant to neglect. Instead, we did the same as we did for Jin, and analysed every piece of YYH media in order to get as wide of a coverage as possible for Hiei’s capabilities, using the manga as a baseline guide.

Naturally, this raises some questions about what exactly we did and didn’t include. If those questions are not answered for you simply by reading the blog, you’re in luck! There will be an in-depth segment in the Clarifications and Answers segment detailing our findings.

Background

Jin Kazama

  • Age: 22
  • Birthday: August 5th
  • Height: 183 cm / 6’0”
  • Weight: 87 kg / 191 lbs
  • Likes: Fighting, training, forest walks, outside baths, his mother, Xiaoyu
  • Former CEO of the Mishima Zaibatsu

The Mishima bloodline is one of the most violent to ever curse this world. As early as the Heian period, this warrior clan had always been built off of bloodshed. From fighting in wars and crushing demons up to the modern days of military subjugation, they have always been a force to be reckoned with and feared. More than their outward struggles though, their internal struggles have been what doomed much of the world to their infighting. The Mishima Zaibatsu’s founder, Jinpachi, defeated by his son, leading to a rule with an iron fist. The power craving despot, Heihachi, defeated by his son. The vengeful child, Kazuya, defeated by his son. It was that son, the one who did not bear the Mishima title at all, who would turn his hatred into the root of the family, dedicated to tearing it down: Jin Kazama.

Born to Jun Kazama and Kazuya Mishima, Jin was raised by his mother in the Yakushima mountains, trained in self defense away from the eyes of his grandfather and assumed dead father. This peaceful life was ripped away when the ancient uncovered Ogre awoke and roamed the lands, looking for powerful martial artists to steal their power from. Before the beast arrived, Jun warned her son that if anything were to happen, he should seek out his grandfather, Heihachi. When Ogre arrived, Jin was knocked out, waking home to his home in ruins and his mother nowhere to be seen, igniting his quest for revenge. Training for years under his grandfather, making many allies along the way, the day would come again for him to fight Ogre on his own. But unable to best him on his own, another twinge of his bloodline stirred in him. Carried down from his father, the immense power of the Devil Gene roared to life within him, giving him the power to kill his mother’s supposed murderer.

However, this was the same power Heihachi feared in his wife and son, leading to a botched execution of Jin. This only stirred the literal devil within him, slaughtering the soldiers around him and wounding his grandfather as he left, filled with a new burning rage for his family. That hatred would drive him for years, not helped when his father was revived, more demonic than ever, kicking off a three-generation feud. This hatred would turn intrinsic when the powers of the Devil Gene continued to wreak havoc within him.

The devil inside him was chaotic and cruel, taking control of his body and unleashing devastation in his wake. Even after besting his father in combat, that fear of his unbridled rage remained, and that would lead him to greater extremes than ever before. Wresting the control of the Zaibatsu, he would wage a war against all of the world, bloody and cruel, all to bring out the negativity consuming progenitor of the Devil Gene, Azael. But even that, with all his sacrifices would not be enough to strip this curse from him nor his father. Worse still, the war would not end, as the control of the Zaibatsu shifted power as Jin was forced to confront his failures and how much harm he brought onto the world, even coming from his good, if self-centered intentions.

It would only be at the end, after Kazuya had finally killed Heihachi (sure), that Jin would have to reflect upon everything. Kazuya’s lust for power spiraled, seeking to dominate the world itself, threatening to destroy everything Jin held dear. It was only then Jin would have to look inside himself and his past. To accept the damage he did to the world and his friends. To accept the devil inside him and use his rage not to harm others, but protect what he loves. And finally, to accept his past and all his loss, guided by his mothers words and Kazama bloodline to purify that rage into his actualized self, an angel who would save everyone, even his father.

In a climax to end his family feud for good, Jin purified the Devil Gene from himself and Kazuya, before facing his father one last time. Despite Kazuya’s immense power, his blind obsession with power blinded him to Jin’s own burning desire. His desire to own his past, connect with his friends, and live. The desire that gave him everything he needed to finally take Kazuya down for good. Sparing him despite everything, Jin hoped to one day see his mother again, moving on with his life, free from the struggles he had faced. After years of fighting family, himself, and the entire world, Jin was free to live his life with those he loved. Even if there will still be those who would try to ruin this new peace, he’ll always fight on to protect it, with an iron fist.

Deep within the Demon Realm, living in the floating island known as the Glacial Country, were a species known as the Ice Maidens. An isolationist clan by nature, the Maidens rejected any and all males out of fear of disaster being brought upon them. If an Ice Maiden were to ever make love with a male, she would have a male baby and would die during the birthing process. Such was the case with the Ice Maiden Hina, who gave birth to the twins Yukina and Hiei.

While his sister was allowed to live among them, Hiei was tossed out of the country while he was still a newborn. Forced to live and survive by himself, Hiei's only goal in life was to claw his way back and justify their fears.

Given his name by bandits of the lower world, Hiei became a vicious murderer, enjoying the act of killing fully, with only the tear of ice left behind by his mother giving his life any respite. But, unfortunately, he would lose even that. His life now had only two goals. To return to his homeland, and to find his precious jewel. In order to achieve this, he had the Evil Eye Jagan implanted on him, granting him unmatched vision. Finding the Glacial Country became a cakewalk with this gift of sight.

But upon returning to his home, all desire for revenge left Hiei. These people's lives were already so miserable, there would be no point in ending them. But his visit granted him new knowledge, a new goal. He had a sister, one who had disappeared from the Country years prior. One goal was fulfilled, but a new one took its place.

In his journey towards these two quests, Hiei ventured into the Human Realm, committing crimes, fighting and befriending the Spirit Detective Yusuke Urameshi, and helping save the world on multiple occasions. But most importantly, he had managed to find and save his sister Yukina.

However, Hiei was beginning to grow tired of it all. Tired of fighting, tired of everything. With his sister granting him her own tear of ice, he believed his goals had finally been completed. Perhaps now, all that was left was to find a good way to die…

But his encounter with the Demon King Mukuro rekindled him. She, too, was shackled by her past, fueled only by her hatred. Neither of them knowing affection. Neither of them knowing what they lived for. And because of that, they were the only ones who could help each other move on and learn to continue living.

Perhaps it's still too soon to leave everything behind.

Training and Skills

Jin Kazama

Despite his relatively young age, Jin has an incredible amount of martial skill under his belt. He takes after both his parents, mastering each of their fighting styles. His mother raised him teaching the Kazama Style Traditional Martial Arts, a style focusing on self-defense and neutralising opponents with joint strikes and swift kicks. After seeking out Heihachi, he was taught the Mishima Style Fighting Karate, originally meant for fighting genuine demons. Turned into a more refined style but not less brutal, it focuses on power strikes coming from every angle, rapid and powerful. In the interim, he’s even practiced more standard karate mixed with original techniques, likely Kyokushin. While he has an affinity for his mother’s teachings, he is effective with all of them and can swap through the styles in the middle of a fight.

It’s those same styles that have helped push him to victory against many powerful opponents time and time again. He’s taken on martial arts past his age many times, including the other masters of his style such as Kazuya, Heihachi, and a possessed Jinpachi, many times, to the point of surpassing them by the time of Tekken 8. He’s taken on elite soldiers trained by corporations all over the world, combat robots, martial artist rivals, and plenty more. Crowning all his achievements are the nigh godly supernatural beings he’s toppled. Ogre, a living weapon absorbing powerful fighters, and Azazel, the demon that birthed the Devil Gene. While it took pushing him to his limit, Jin toppled even them at their peak, nothing standing in his way to prove himself as one of the strongest and most capable fighters on the planet.

Kazama Style Traditional Martial Arts

  • White Heron Dance - A combo focusing on swift turns and kicks, striking the enemies sides to open them up. There are variations that can end with a sweeping kick to the head or legs.
  • Tooth Fairy - Known to lamer people as the Demon Slayer, Jin takes a short step forward and delivers a vertical uppercut, sending enemies up high.
  • Spinning High Kick - What it says on the tin, a spin into a back kick aiming at the opponents head.
  • Back Spin Kick - Equally simple, a swift spin and straight kick to the opponent’s face/
  • Thunder Fall Kick - An aerial cartwheel leading into a devastating kick slamming down.
  • Leg Cutter - A series of three leg sweeps, spinning along the ground.
  • Double Lift Kick - Jin kicks forward twice, to the center and high, propelling his enemy higher into the air.
  • Moon Scent - Jin sweeps from below to trip his opponent, before quickly cartwheeling backwards as he kicks his opponent.
  • White Mountain - Jin grabs his opponents wrist, tossing them to the ground behind him with a punch to the back.

Mishima Style Fighting Karate

  • Electric Wind God Fist - An attack equally iconic and devastating, a swift step forward leading into a firm uppercut.
  • Dragon Uppercut - Jin ducks forward, leaning in as he extends into a powerful uppercut.
  • Flash Punch Combo - Jin swiftly strikes with two upper jabs, finishing with a powerful third to the gut.
  • Back Fist Combo - Another rapid flurry of jabs, ended with a swift spinning backhand.
  • Demon Backhand Spin - A simpler version of the above, with only one jab preceding the backhand.
  • Right/Left Splits Kick - Twin overhead kicks, with the swifter left and stronger right.
  • Tsunami Kick - Jin kicks forward and up, before slamming back down with his heel.
  • Spinning Demon - Jin spins along the ground with a sweeping kick, able to branch out into strikes at different heights.
  • Demon Scissors - With a forward somersault, Jin brings both his legs down as he falls on his back, leaving him open but dangerous to get hit by.
  • Stonehead - One way to use your head, Jin grips his enemy’s head before reeling back to deliver a nasty headbutt.
  • Rising Sun - Jin leaps into a spin kick, hitting opponents in the head before diving into a sweeping kick.
  • 10 Hit Combo - Putting all the pieces together, this devastating combo unleashes a brutal set of attacks, striking all over the opponent and ending with a Dragon Uppercut.

Original Karate Techniques

  • Laser Cannon - Jin unleashes a series of roundhouses, able to branch into various finishers, such as an uppercut or somersault kick.
  • Demon’s Paw - One of Jin’s most devastating original moves, he takes a fierce lunge forward, delivering a devastating punch to his foes.
  • Tidal Wave - Jin locks his opponents arm and grabs their face, leaping up and smashing them into the ground.
  • Shun Ren Dan - A swift combo starting with Jin slamming his enemy into his knee and ending with a roundhouse to send them flying.
  • Black Wing Rondo - Manifesting a fraction of his Devil powers, Jin delivers a claw swipe fierce enough to flip himself into the air.
  • Black Wing Flash - Another minor manifestation of the Devil Gene, Jin lunges forward with a strike, a dash empowered by a phantom wing.
  • Median Line Destruction - A swift blow of punches to the center, capable of being extended into a punch rush that would make a Joestar proud.

Hiei

While Hiei possesses no known training in particular, he has become extremely skilled in combat from his experience alone. Ever since he was a child, Hiei experienced combat and thrived in killing other demons, a flying shadow that other bandits simply couldn't keep up with. Through his vicious nature alone, Hiei became an A-Class Demon, but threw it all away in order to implant the Jagan.

But even being reverted down to the lowest tier of Demon didn't stop him. He could easily match skilled fighters like Yusuke Urameshi, who is good enough at brawling to match adversaries who mastered all Martial Arts. In the Dark Tournament, Hiei managed to win every round he participated in with minimal difficulty, even against enemies like Kuro Momotaro, who could adapt to all types of damage Hiei could try to inflict.

Hiei’s also a master of the Blazing Overlord’s Fist, a martial art forbidden in the Human Realm meant to be practiced only by demons. Though details on this art are extremely scarce, we know it is directly tied to Hiei’s mastery of the Darkness Flame, something no other warrior or demon in all of history had been able to accomplish before him.

He would eventually not only reclaim his prior status as an A Class, but far surpass it. Trapped in an area with 500 A Class demons, Hiei spent half a year killing every single one of them, with them standing absolutely no chance against him. He may lack in formal training, but do not underestimate the Jagan's Master.

Gloves

Like any good martial artist, Jin’s signature weapons are his fists, and in order to both protect and strengthen those weapons, he wears a pair of snazzy studded gloves. And let’s just say that if a punch from him didn’t hurt already, you definitely don’t want one of these flying at your face.

Motorcycle

A badass dude needs a badass ride. It’s as simple as these bikes go, though in stylish fashion, he can rev it to speed up buildings or just toss it at enemies while on the go.

Sword

In battle, Hiei carries nothing but a simple sword. It possesses no unique or special properties, but in the hands of a monster like Hiei, it becomes an unrivalled blade that can cut through any opponent.

Powers and Abilities

Jin Kazama

Devil Gene

The gene that started the endless infighting to begin with, the Devil Gene is feared for good reason. Thousands of years ago, the demon Azazel ruled over the world with fear and power. Those who opposed him would fight hard to see him sealed, but those who sided with him were gifted a sliver of his power, the Devil Gene. With this power, the carriers of the genes could call upon their strongest desires to unleash the literal devil within them.

Years after Azazel was imprisoned, the surviving descendants, the Hachijo Clan, instead used this power to protect the world as assassins. Kazumi Hachijo attempted this with Heihachi, marrying him and even having a son together, but her dedication was for naught, leading to her husband killing both her and eradicating the entirety of the clan. This was not just the inciting incident for Kazuya’s rage against his father, but the desire that manifested his Devil. And when Kazuya had his own child, the Devil Gene passed on to Jin.

While the gene primarily only provides the ability for transformation, the Devil within can manipulate the feelings of its host, driving them to embrace their desires and dark urges more and more. With time, Jin has become able to manifest minor aspects of his Devil form to supplement his usual fighting style.

The Devil Gene also prevents baldness.

Ki Control

Like the rest of his family, Jin possesses the ability to utilise his inner energy for offensive means, materialising it in the form of lightning. He does with this ability what all great men would, and uses it to punch people even harder.

Resistances

  • Soul / Sin Manipulation: Heihachi survived Akuma’s Shun Goku Satsu, and Jin should be capable of the same.
  • Power Absorption: Jin resisted Devil Kazuya's attempts to absorb his Devil Gene to make the Devil whole again.
  • Paralysis: True Devil Kazuya managed to power through the restriction spell used by Claudio. Jin should be able to do the same.

Hiei

Demon Energy

The source of most of Hiei’s powers. All YuYu Hakusho characters run on a “Ki” system as seen in other shonen series like Dragon Ball. All of their special abilities run on this Ki, which is a limited supply that can be greatly diminished depending on the user’s stamina or how much energy they put into an attack.

Characters like Toguro have been able to make their enemies melt simply through unleashing their Energy, with Hiei's Dragon of the Darkness Flame having similar effects of making those too weak instantly combust.

Astral Projection

A simple and basic technique for any demon worth his salt. Hiei can easily separate his soul from his body if the need comes. He can utilize all of his regular powers while in this spiritual state, so it’s exclusively beneficial against those without spiritual awareness.

Jagan Eye

Implanted on Hiei by the Demon Surgeon Shigure. The Evil Eye, or Jagan, is an incredibly versatile tool for Hiei in his journeys. It is initially described as granting Hiei the ability to control lesser demons and humans with merely a glance, as well as granting him clairvoyance. It was later shown to heavily increase Hiei’s senses in general, giving him the ability to see things from several kilometres away as clearly as if they were in front of him.

In the anime, he could even use the power of the Jagan to telekinetically bring his sword towards him, and lift Yusuke into the air. Get fucked sasuke

Fist of the Mortal Flame

Sword of the Darkness Flame

By combining his own Youki alongside the flames and focusing them on his blade, Hiei can form a Sword of Darkness Flame. The combination of flame and blade is so intense that it can completely overcome Kuro Momotaro, who had become completely immune to regular sword swings and human flames.

Hiei actively prefers to avoid using this technique though, it reminds him too much of Kuwabara.

Dragon of the Darkness Flame

The most powerful technique of them all. The Dragon of the Darkness Flame draws upon black flames directly from the Demon Realm, so ungodly powerful that one too weak to withstand its power would be reduced to a black mark in their shape. Due to its absurd heat and power, it took long for Hiei to master this technique, but eventually he became the Dragon’s undeniable master.

The true power of the Dragon isn’t simply its destructive potential, however. Hiei reveals in his fight against Bui that he can fully absorb the Dragon into himself, which massively upgrades his sheer physical strength to the point where Bui could not do him any meaningful harm, as well as give him the ability to completely repel his Battle Aura (The dub says he “sucked away” the Battle Aura)

Transformations

Jin Kazama

Devil Jin

When Kazuya Mishima died, the Devil within him was split in half. While half of it resided inside him, waiting for his revival, half fled to the only one remaining with the Devil Gene, a new host in Jin. While Jun was able to fight it off for a time, when Ogre bested her, Jin was made its new host.

Originally only manifesting in life or death moments or when he is burdened by rage, Jin has learned to control it in time, accepting the devil within and learning to manifest the form at will. Devil Jin is absurdly powerful, able to wipe out powerful fighters and entire ecosystems in the blink of an eye, paired with sharped claws to slash enemies, His style expands to include other moves such as the furious Hell Cyclone or the aptly titled Decapitating SwordHis most obvious change are the wings upon his back. While he can extend them for strikes, they function as well as you’d think wings would, letting him fly at high speeds in the midst of battle or across the world, even able to take him into the upper atmosphere.

It’s more than just raw strength and physical changes he has, as a variety of supernatural powers are awoken by this change. Devil Jin can create shocking energy chains or telekinetically grip and explode others in his reach. He even seems to be able to create minor pocket dimensions and energy swords to punish his enemies. Most iconic of them all though, are the beams he can produce from his newly opened third eye, often dubbed the Hellfire Blast. This laser can burn through opponents with ease, and though non-canonical when presented, an outraged Jin could immolate the entire planet with it.

Angel Jin

The culmination of Jin’s two familial halves, Angel Jin is the absolute pinnacle of power. Using the Kazama Clan’s purifying powers to embolden and cleanse the devil inside him, this radiant form brings a massive boost to everything Devil Jin could do.

His prior abilities all remain, bolstered even further. His chest can fire an additional powerful laser, teleport to rapidly close in on foes, create swords of pure light, and create a similar pocket dimension to restrain and wail on his enemies. Most importantly to Jin though, was the unlocking of his purifying powers, using it to remove the Devil Gene from both himself and Kazuya during their final fight, though the limitations on what this purification can extend to are unknown.

Hiei

Jaganshi

During his first fight with Yusuke, Hiei entered this demonic form, which greatly amplifies the power of the Jagan eye, allowing him to cast a binding spell impossible to break out of. It was believed at the time that this was Hiei’s true demonic form (which Togashi clearly retconned later), but it made an appearance in the Poltergeist Report movie, where it was awakened in an attempt to make Hiei succumb to his most evil instincts. Hiei, of course, resisted such a foolish tactic and used the power boost of the form to unleash the Black Dragon Wave, manifesting several Dragons of the Darkness Flame at once to annihilate any target.

Scaling

Jin Kazama

Mishima Family

Should be far from surprising. The Mishima’s treat infighting like family picnic time, and Jin has gone fist to fist with all of them numerous times, beating Heihachi, Jinpachi, and even Kazuya at his strongest. As of Tekken 8, Angel Jin had the power to completely no diff True Devil Kazuya and purify his power, solidly cementing Jin as the strongest of the family tree.

Others

And thanks to his current angelic status as the world’s strongest fighter, Jin should thus also be comparable to just about every other feat performed in the franchise as well.

Weaknesses

Jin Kazama

Jin is an incredible fighter, with very little in terms of weak points.

Due to his focus on martial arts, he is primarily focused on close quarters combat, with the lasers from his transformed states being his only true method to deal with far away enemies. Also, if his will falters or he rejects his Devil side, it could make him much weaker… but by the end of Tekken 8 this isn't really a problem anymore.

Hiei

(He was kind of a bum in that first fight)

Hiei’s most devastating attacks, such as the Dragon of the Darkness Flame, require a considerable amount of Energy to be utilized properly. If Hiei runs low on Ki, he will be rendered completely unable to use them. In addition, the Jagan’s effects, mighty as they are, can be directly weakened by blinding the eye directly.

Clarifications and Answers

So, what exactly is usable for both?

Tekken Tag Tournament: TTT and its sequel are widely considered non-canonical, essentially being “all-stars” games for the Tekken franchise and featuring many characters that weren’t canonically active at that point in the series. However, multiple character endings are considered canon and are referenced in Tekken 7. Furthermore, with the higher scale the Mishima family operates on in Tekken 8, scaling to feats from Tag Tournament hardly contradict what characters in the franchise are capable of nowadays.

Tekken Blood Vengeance: Anyone who has watched the film should be able to tell you that Blood Vengeance doesn’t exactly line up with the Tekken canon. Death Battle themselves brought this up back in Ryu vs Jin, citing Harada’s tweet about it as their source, and while he did state in another tweet that it was more like “half canon”, the events of it clearly do not match up with any part of Tekken’s story. Thus, Jin’s cool extra devil forms sadly aren’t applicable here, nor is his battle against the spirit-summoned temple titan piloted by Heihachi. Real shit. Look it up, it's wild.

Tekken Bloodline: Though Bloodline follows the storyline of Tekken 3 broadly enough, certain events in the show put its canonicity into question, such as the fact that Paul lost and never fought base Ogre. However, similar to the point brought up for TTT, given the higher scale that the Mishimas operate on in Tekken 8, using feats from Bloodline is reasonable given how they’ve long since surpassed themselves. Even then, due to being a retelling of Tekken 3, not much needs to be added that isn’t already relevant elsewhere.

YuYu Hakusho Movies: The YuYu movies are weird. While the first one is simply a fun little misadventure that doesn’t really matter one way or the other, the second one, Poltergeist Report (Also known as Bonds of Fire), is a lot more worthy of discussion. It’s a small story taking place in between the events of the Dark Tournament and Chapter Black, featuring the never before seen (or after, they’re not really canon) Netherworld and its ruler Yakumo’s plans to take over the human realm. This movie is very likely not canon, couldn’t find any proof of Togashi having any involvement with it, but it serves as supporting evidence for the planetary levels of power End of Series YuYu Hakusho showcases.

YuYu Hakusho Video Games: YuYu has a lot of video games. Most of them are completely untranslated, but based on footage and the ones that actually got released in the West, all of them seem to either just be fighting games or retellings of the usual YuYu Hakusho story, not really adding a lot to the discussion.

YuYu Hakusho Netflix: The live action YuYu Hakusho Netflix series is a very rushed retelling of the Three Treasures and Toguro arcs of the original anime, unfortunately skipping over the Dark Tournament and only having 5 episodes to its name. It adds nothing of relevance to VS.

Is Jin a planet buster?

Planet level Tekken is an idea that has been around for years at this point, but people haven't really been able to get a concrete idea on whether or not it actually has any merit to it. That's why we're here!

Now, when people discuss this topic, they generally cite one of several supposed world destroying statements from the likes of Azazel and Jinpachi, and since Jin defeated both of them, he should naturally scale.

Sadly, these unfortunately do not hold much weight. First off, with Tekken 5’s Jinpachi, the statement goes that Jinpachi’s goal "is to destroy all existence". When fighting against Wang, he claims that if he was not stopped, "it will be the end of humanity". This is all we really get from Jinpachi, and these statements are very vague. How is he going to destroy all existence? Through what method? How long would it take? We really have no way to gauge his power from these measly two lines.

Now Azazel, that guy has a bit more meat on the bones. While Jin is setting up World War 3, Zafina claims that, just as foretold in ancient prophecy, "The world is headed for destruction". However, once Azazel manifests fully, he explains that his goal is to punish humanity for their sins.

In both scenarios, the “destruction of the world” seems to be more equated with the death of all humanity rather than the planet itself getting destroyed. Nothing you can really argue planet busting levels of power from.

Now, planet level Tekken did actually get a somewhat in-universe showcase in Devil Jin's Tekken 8 ending, where he flies into orbit and immolates the entire planet with a single blast. Surely, that's enough to push him easily into planetary levels of power?

Well… it's unlikely. Calcs for this feat doesn't get it higher than petatons, or multi-continental at best. Even assuming that Devil Jin was super casual and only used 1% of his power for this attack, he'd still miss out on planetary power by quite a bit and land himself solidly at moon level.

Lets talk about Akuma

Because we know at least one of you smartasses would comment about him otherwise.

Short answer: No. The Akuma from Tekken 7 is not the same Akuma from Street Fighter. Don’t be silly.

Alright, so how fast is Hiei?

This topic is really annoying.

Yu Yu Hakusho’s speed is still a bit of a contentious topic, particularly when it comes to the possibility of lightspeed or even FTL movement for its cast. Let’s go over these arguments, and see where that leaves us.

First of all, the Spirit Gun. During Yusuke’s first fight with Hiei, he makes a gamble that the Spirit Gun would share similar enough properties with light that it would bounce back upon hitting a mirror, which does end up happening. Simple, right? If it shares properties with light, surely we can apply light’s speed to the Spirit Gun? …Not really. First of all, the Spirit Gun cracks the mirror upon making contact, and there is a total absence of any statements that the Spirit Gun moves at the speed of light, which is important when a laser like it possesses disqualifiers. The Spirit Gun being lightspeed is simply a leap in logic.

Ah, but what about Musashi’s photons, directly stated to be beams of light? A single, unsupported example that no character ever reacts to. But what about Genkai manifesting her energy in a way that made the Kanji for light show up, which Yusuke reacted to? While this may very well be a flash of light proper… Putting your hand in front of you to block a bright light is not lightspeed reaction speed. That’s just common sense.

Outside of the Spirit Gun, there’s no good instance of anyone in Yu Yu Hakusho properly reacting to light, making FTL unusable for the sake of this blog. But that leaves us with our actual question: How fast is Hiei, then?

As a baseline, we know for a fact that Hiei is massively faster than Suzaku's lightning, both from already being leagues faster than Yusuke when the feat actually occurred, and from being an S Class Demon that eclipses characters like Suzaku on all fronts. Trying to find an exact number for how much faster Hiei is, however, is a frustrating endeavor.

After a lot of debate and considering various avenues for finding a hard number for Hiei's speed, we have decided to use the 0.57c calculation for the Okunen Tree. While it's questionable if Hiei scales to this feat directly, even more so to its speed, we figured it was as close as we could get with the least amount of hurdles to jump over.

Alright, so how strong is Hiei?

Ooh, ooh, I know this one”, you say. You wave your arm for attention as you think of the two YYH episodes we’ve gotten. “The best strength feat in the series is from the Okunen tree punch! That’s how strong Hiei is!”

Well, I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but in spite of what you have been led to believe, Hiei does not scale to this feat. Like, at all.

It is true that Hiei claimed to be Yusuke’s equal to Mukuro, which is consistent with how they were shown to be completely evenly matched in the Chapter Black Arc. Hiei wouldn’t lie or gloat without needing to, so it’s fair to assume his training before the Makai Tournament made him comparable to Mazoku Yusuke. The problem, however, is that Yusuke received a brand new never before seen power boost after Hiei’s statement, which is how he does the Tree feat. Add that to the fact that Hiei’s showing against Mukuro wasn’t NEARLY as impressive as Yusuke against Yomi, and there’s no direct chain that connects Hiei to the Okunen tree punch.

That being said, Hiei is still probably some degree of planetary. Yakumo was defeated by Yusuke and the gang far before they became S Class demons, and he was powerful enough to destroy the entire Human Realm. With that in mind, and considering that Yusuke became powerful enough to match Sensui in spite of his claim that a ten times increase of Yusuke’s Reiki wouldn’t be enough to reach him, it becomes clear that Hiei should very much be able to destroy a planet, likely being far stronger. Guess he didn’t need that tree after all.

Kuwabara can do fucking what now

During the Chapter Black arc, it’s established that the space separating the Human and Demon Realms is known as a “hyperspace” (or subspace, the kanji can mean either). Kuwabara, Hiei and Kurama also get captured by the Inverse Man, a 2D youkai who lives between dimensions, and are said to be in “Hyperspace”.

Using his Dimension Sword, Kuwabara is able to cut through these hyperspaces, slicing through the Inverse Man and destroying the barrier placed by Spirit Realm to stop demons from passing through.

As absolutely hilarious as it would be for Kuwabara to be 4D, the far more logical outcome is that Kuwabara possesses unique spatial cutting abilities to facilitate these slices. Considering that characters even stronger than Kuwabara can’t do things like cutting through the barrier, it’s very clearly meant to be a hax ability unrelated to Attack Potency.

Summary

Jin Kazama

Advantages:

  • Far greater formal training.
  • Overall likely more experienced.
  • Faster, both in travel and reactions.
  • Wider array of useful abilities through his Devil and Angel forms.
  • Angel Jin can likely purify the Jagan, rendering many of Hiei’s abilities gone.
  • He’s Jin Kazama he brings the drama

Disadvantages:

  • Weaker, even at his most powerful.
  • His dad got into Smash instead of him.
  • English voice acting

Hiei

Advantages:

  • More powerful, potentially to extreme degrees.
  • Wider array of useful abilities at a base level.
  • His innate abilities manifested from demonic energy are likely safe from Angel Jin’s purification.
  • English voice acting

Disadvantages:

  • Slower, funnily enough.
  • Less consistent showings of training.
  • never even actually scaled to the funny tree feat

Verdict

Jin vs Hiei is a match that, all things considered, is pretty easy to analyse once all information has been laid out.

As far as tertiary factors go, neither has a solid advantage. While it's certainly true that Jin has more formal experience, Hiei's longer lifespan and training under Mukuro means there's a solid chance he can keep up in spite of Jin's clear advantage. On the flip side, Jin has a lot of experience with the likes of military subjugation and battles with demonic entities, so it's unlikely that Hiei's tricks could take him off guard.

A similar argument could be said for their abilities. Base Jin obviously offers little for this category, but Devil Jin possesses a lot of the same abilities that Hiei can gain from the Jagan and his demonic energy, such as energy absorption and telekinesis. However, as we get into the nitty gritty of what they can do, Jin's advantage here becomes clear.

For instance, Hiei has little defence against Jin's ability to create pocket dimensions, nor a solid way to keep up with his flightspeed and clearly superior ranged attacks. The Dragon of the Darkness Flame may offer power beyond Jin's standard kit, but it won't do much when its target has every means required to avoid, absorb, or trap it. Furthermore, Angel Jin's abilities of purification could potentially even spell the end for the Jagan, given how very much like the Devil Gene, it's a possessive implant of demonic heritage.

Still though, it's unlikely these abilities could seal the deal for Jin, since Hiei is one tough bitch and can keep trucking on until his demonic energy runs out. So at the end, it comes down to sheer power. Is Jin able to stall until Hiei's defences wear down?

Well… that's where this debate turns kinda… undebatable. Devil Jin's best showing of power can be matched by Kurama growing a big tree (643 Petatons vs 536 Petatons), and it's pretty evident by all margins that Hiei is high above this. Numerous characters in YYH have planetary capabilities, and Hiei scales to just about every one of them. Nothing in Tekken gets close to this level of power. (The lowest energy required to destroy an Earth sized planet is 59 Zettatons, over 90 million times stronger than Devil Jin's Earth-frying blast)

Even if we were to take Alisa's non-canon Blood Vengeance statement of the Devil Gene's full potential being a 10x increase on this, and then highballed Angel Jin to a 100x multiplier on top of that, that'd still be a difference of over 9 thousand times. And that would be ignoring Hiei's own multiplier. Remember, Sensui claimed that there was a ten times difference between him and Yusuke after the Yakumo fight, so Hiei should logically be even stronger than this.

All things considered, Jin's speed advantage (Jin's at best 1.54 c vs Hiei's at least 0.57 c) is not enough to where he can avoid this level of Earth-shattering power for long enough for Hiei to expend all of his energy. Meanwhile, all Hiei needs to win is a single hit even in his base form.

Ultimately, Jin does have his advantages, but there's only so much he can do when the difference in power is this astronomical. In this fight between devils, Jin got Hakushown up, and Tekken out back, allowing Hiei a pretty straightforward victory.
