Prediction Blog: Shino Aburame vs Wriggle Nightbug

"Bzzzzz bzzzt bztttttt buzz buzz" - the fly that was on my wall last night

Shino Aburame, Konoha's resident Insect Shinobi

Wriggle Nightbug, the firefly Youkai of Gensokyo

Creepy, crawly, insects. Many love them. Even more hate them. But either side you stand on, it's impossible to deny that they're fascinating creatures, more complex than anyone can even begin to truly fathom. Yet, even with all the studies done on them to this day, only a select few can command nature's greatest soldiers to their own wills.

And as two of them come face to face, it's time to solve a neverbefore asked question. Can one of Konoha's elite Shinobi take on one of Gensokyo's "monstrous" Youkai? Let's find out!

Before we begin...

(Also shoutouts to this blog for having a lot of readily avaliable Touhou feats. Made things a lot easier.)

Background

Shino Aburame

Konoha, the village hidden in the leaves, is home to all sorts of awe-inspiring ninja. From legendary warriors like Naruto and Sasuke, and respected teachers Kakashi and Guy, to some other ninja that may not be your first thought due to Kishimoto forgetting he existed not peeking his head around too often. This is Shino Aburame.

Born into the Aburame Clan of insect users, Shino was implanted with his family's signature, the special, chakra-feeding Kikaichū insects. What may seem like a strange parasitic relationship to us is what makes the Aburame Clan so fearsome, as their bond with their symbiotic partners grant them abilities never seen anywhere else.

Shino would use these unique abilities to enter the Konoha Ninja Academy, easily becoming one of their top students, carrying his team through the Chunin Exams almost single-handedly. But although his lost his role in the story steam soon thereafter, he continued to grow, aiding the world to fend of the alien threat of Kaguya Ōtsutsuki during the Fourth Great Ninja War. Don't look up what he actually did though please let him sound this impressive he really needs it. He may not be your first thought compared to his peers, but Shino Aburame proves that anyone can be a formidable warrior, no matter your shape or size.

Wriggle Nightbug

Through out the mystical land of Gensokyo, the Youkai are some of the most intense and unique creatures you can find. The powerful gap hag Yukari Yakumo, the fearsome devil Remilia Scarlet, and... a singular, energetic firefly; Wriggle Nightbug.

What's her story? What does she want out of life? Well, it's not really exactly known. And like most of Gensokyo's residents, it doesn't really matter, now does it? What matters to her is having a grand old time flying around the forest, hosting insect concerts for her own amusement, and taking charge of the Insect Notification Service (until she forgot about it).

Sure, she may attack humans who approach her, but it all comes from a love of her fellow insect kind. Wriggle truly loves the crawlies of the animal kingdom, and will go to hell and back to fight off anyone who dares take action upon them or underestimates their importance to the world. Like many lesser youkai, she may not be the toughest, but the determination and optimism of Wriggle Nightbug is difficult to match.

Equipment

Shinobi Weapons

It shouldn't be a shock that Shino has access to the basics of a Shinobi's arsenal, the weapons that we see used most commonly across the Naruto franchise. He may not have shown much proficiency with most of them, but due to his status as a high-ranking ninja and the fact that he's a teacher by the time of Boruto, its far from a stretch to say he's more than trained in using them.
  • Kunai: The most famous of ninja artillery, Kunai are sharp daggers that are designed for quick stabs and slices on foes within reach, but are more popularly utilised as throwing weapons that a skilled Shinobi can use to puncture their foes from afar.
  • Shuriken: The actual throwing weapon, and one so synonymous with ninja that it's literally called "ninja star" sometimes. Shuriken are a favourite of Shino's, and he can throw them expertly enough to swat targets out of the air and slice throats open. Probably, at least.
  • Wire Strings: Useful for stealthy assassinations, a ninja may carry a thin wire string with them that can easily sever limbs and necks with enough pulling force. You'll never see it coming, and you won't feel a thing.
  • Smoke Bombs: For when a ninja wants to get out of a sticky situation. Smoke Bombs are... bombs! Once thrown down on the ground, they'll release a thick cloud of smoke, allowing the ninja to sneak off to a hidey hole.
  • Gas Bombs: Similar in function and usage to the Smoke Bombs above, but with a twist. The gas they release is noxious, meaning inhaling it is sure to knock you out or at least make you cough real bad.
  • Flash Bombs: Use this, and you'll be gone in a flash! Literally! Flash Bombs are for those who don't consider Smoke Bombs quite their thing, and are, once again, bombs! This time tough, they'll release a blinding flash of light to momentarily stun whoever looks at them.
  • Explosive Tags: Paper tags that have been outfitted with the Japanese kanji for "explode". And that they do. Explosive Tags are versatile in that they can be stuck onto targets and detonated remotely, or even kunai to work as projectile explosions.
  • Sealing Tags: Sealing Tags share the attachment properties with their explosive counterparts, but obviously focus on Sealing foes instead. The way they work is that when coming into contact with a target, the tag will begin spreading the specific seal in order to effectively lock them in place or trap them. Multiple Sealing Tags can be used together for a stronger effect, and can't be removed through ordinary means. Logically an instant-win move against most foes.
  • Poisons: Although not exactly part of the standard ninja kit, some Shinobi carry vials of different poisons to use against foes, such as irritations and paralysers. Some of them even dip their kunai in the stuff in order to nail opponents from far away.
  • Antidotes: Cures Poisons

Kikaichū

Kikaichū are sentient insects that Shino can command and make up the entire basis of his primary fighting style. Infused into an Aburame Clan member at birth, the insects will soon develop a symbiotic relationship with their hosts, feeding off their chakra while in turn allowing themselves to follow their every command.

Aside from specific attacks and techniques (Which will be expanded on in the Abilities section), Kikaichū have a fair share of important usages. For instance, the host can use them in order to cling to surfaces, or have them cover an enemy in order to keep them in place. The beetles can even draw out poisons should their host be injected with it, or feed on the chakra of others in order to drain and even kill them

But most important is their usage for information and espionage. Shino is capable of communicating with the insects, meaning he can send them out to scavenge for information and return it to him in an instant. They're also immensely powerful trackers, capable of locking onto chakra signatures even after teleporting. Should he be faced with a foe he can't track even them, he can implant female Kikaichū hormones onto them, and the male beetles will pursue them relentlessly

And, just for kicks I guess, Shino eventually decided to breed poisonous Kikaichū. If they bite ya, you'll get poisoned real bad hooooo boy! (Totally didn't find this out at the absolute end of the research and writing period nono not at all they're poisonous what else do you want from me)

Powers and Abilities

Shino Aburame

Taijutsu

The ninja art of hand to hand combat, Taijutsu is one of the most basic and important principles that Shinobi are taught. While ninja can use chakra (see below) to strengthen their blows, the major principles of Taijutsu boil down to precision and skill. In fact, most ninja are taught how to take opponents down with a single strike to their pressure points

Chakra

Chakra has for a large variety of different usages, such as allowing a ninja to cling to surfaces and walk on water. They can also use it in order to enhance their physical prowess, meaning most cases of chakra-enhanced physicality can be compared to Ninjutsu

Ninjutsu

Ninjutsu refers to the art of utilising a mixture of chakra and hand seals to form powerful techniques called Nature Transformations. Most commonly, this comes in the form of utilising one or several of the five elements (eat shit, Avatar): Fire, Water, Air, Earth, and Lightning, tough ninja usually only have proficiency in one or two of these. In Shino's case, he has access to Fire, Earth, and Yang style Ninjutsu (tough he never uses these so oops!).

Ninjutsu isn't solely elemental attacks tough, it's a term used for a large spread of differing techniques. Shino hasn't showcased many of these, but he should logically have access to at least the following:
  • Substitution Jutsu: A ninja stable, Shino can use the Substitution Jutsu in order to instantly replace himself with a log, rock, or whatever other object is nearby the moment he's struck by an attack, causing an optical illusion that confuses the foe and allows him to escape from damage.
  • Transformation Jutsu: An useful technique for all fights, the Transformation Jutsu allows Shino to transform his body into other people, animals, plants, and even inanimate objects.
  • Cloning Jutsu: Shino creates an illusionary copy of himself that doesn't possess any mass. Since its unable to attack or take hits for him, it can be difficult to use in combat, but a ninja with enough creativity can use it well enough regardless.
  • Temporary Paralysis Jutsu: A long range technique that Shino can use in order to completely paralyse his targets for a short time, making it seem as if they have been bound with steel cables.

Parasitic Destruction Insect Technique
(Aburame Clan Insect Jutsu)

The signature technique of the Aburame Clan and the thing that grants them their unique abilities. Shortly after a member of the Aburame Clan is born, thousands of Kikaichū beetles are allowed to colonise their body, using their chakra to survive in order to deal no damage to the organic body. In return, they allow themselves to be utilised in any way through hosts wants, with no restriction or antagonism. Teamwork truly makes the dreamwork.

Kikaichū Insect Style Ninjtsu

As they possess one of the most unique biologies in all of the ninja world, its no suprise that the Aburame Clan developed an interesting fighting style. Naturally, their whole deal is using thousands upon thousands of insects in order to take down foes. Shino is easily one of the most powerful members of his clan, and has developed a number of devastating Kikaichū techniques.
  • Spindle Formation: Shino sends out his bugs in a spiralling motion to attack the target. It's the technique shown in the gif above.
  • Insect Clone Technique: Shino creates a duplicate of himself composed out of his insects, which can move and even communicate just as well as the real version.
  • Insect Jamming Technique: Shino commands the Kikaichū to spread out around a large area and release a small amount of their chakra. This is used to confuse opponents who rely on sensing chakra, as there now are several dozens of chakra signatures instead of only Shino's.
  • Insect Jar Technique: Shino has his Kikaichū fly around him at high speeds, orbiting him to create a shield-style bubble for defence.
  • Insect Rope Technique: Shino releases a large amount of Kikaichū from a rope or a string that he's holding onto, strengthening it.
  • Parasitic giant Insect - Bug Bite: One of Shino's most devastating techniques, he uses it by commanding a large number of his Kikaichū to burrow into his foes skin to begin devouring their flesh and chakra, causing them to suddenly grow in size and explode out of the target' body, destroying it. I'd call that a little more than a bug bite, personally.
  • Secret Technique - Insect Cocoon: Shino focuses his chakra in order to remotely accelerate the growth of his insects. This is a high-risk, high-reward move, as the positive results are more than worth it, but being caught while casting it leaves him helpless and vulnerable.
  • Secret Technique - Insect Sphere: The Kikaichū fly out and, once they find the target, completely covers them head to toe while slowly eating them. That's like... the worst way to go.
  • Secret Technique - Insect Tornado: The name is like.... exactly what the technique does. The insects cover the target, and then shreds them apart with a tornado-like spin attack.
  • Secret Technique - Insect Wall: bug wall

Summoning Jutsu

Should he ever need a little more aid than the insects in him can grant, Shino can cast a Summoning Jutsu to transport a giant beetle to himself, capable of being used both as a ride and a battering ram.

Youkai Physiology - Overview

Although Youkai vary a lot across all their different subspecies, the basic nature of them are consistent across all of Gensokyo. For starters, they are primarily spiritual-based entities as opposed to physical ones, are consistently more powerful than humans, and can live for up to hundreds of years with ease.

According to Yukari Yakumo (and she knows her stuff), Youkai were birthed when the Moon's dim light caused humanity to fear and make legends about them. Though, over time they began to take on more human-like qualities and personalities, many of them losing their monstrous traits. Still, Youkai are dependant on the continous existence of human conflict to survive, forcing them into causing strange incidents in order to make humanity still fear them. Luckily, should they ever go too far, we can count on one of several incident resolvers to step in and take care of that.

Now, let's talk powers. Most Youkai possess the same baseline abilities, which are:
  • Resistances:

Insect Control

Moving on to the thing that actually makes Wriggle unique amongst her Youkai brethren, her ability to control and manipulate insects. After all, what else would you expect from someone littlerally named Wriggle Nightbug?

Wriggle can command any sort of insect flawlessly, no matter the type, and they'll always obey her command. Wether it be fireflies, hornets, crickets, moths, beetles and butterflies, or even non-insect bugs like centipedes, spiders, mites, and scorpions, they'll all follow her word the same. Wriggle's insects are also intelligent, and she can talk to them or have them transport information across long distances for tactics and strategy.

This may not seem like the most useful ability, but good luck fighting what you can't see, and even more good luck withstanding the effects. Reminder, there exists wasps, ants, and spiders with bites that can fatally poison you, paralyse you, or even just inflict unending pain. Wriggle has even commanded mites who's bites can inflict fatal diseases with no known cures.

Danmaku

The most basic of abilities that all characters in Touhou possess, as well as their primary fighting style. Danmaku refers to the ability to create dozens upon dozens of energy projectiles and launching them near-instantaneously all over the place. Some danmaku move fast, and some move slow, some pass through objects, and some home in on targets. Either way, watch your back... and front... and- honestly just watch out or you'll get hit.

Some of Wriggle's danmaku even involves insects as projectiles. Questionable animal abuse? Maybe. Shockingly effective? You got it!

Spell Cards: Spell Cards are specific danmaku techniques that the wielder can utilise whenever they feel like boosting their power or taking out foes quickly. Most commonly, these manifest themselves as hordes of more danmaku than could normally ever be used at once, but they're quite flavourful as well. The process of creating a Spell Card involves at first giving it a name in order to define its existence, form, and power, not too unlike how the gods originally named everything in the beginning. Spell Card users can then alter their Spell Cards in any way similar to how the gods alter reality, tough obviously on a much smaller scale.

Wriggle's Spell Cards are as follows:

Scaling

Shino Aburame

How strong is Shino Aburame? Well, we know for a fact that he was in the upper tiers of power during the classic Naruto series Chunin Exams, considering how he was one of the few Genin to make it to the final exam alongside the likes of Naruto, Gaara, and Shikimaru. Logically, this suggests he should scale to most feats from that era of Naruto, preformed both by his fellow students and teachers, considering how Gaara could easily defeat Gate 1 Lee, who in turn is comparable to Guy when at a similar level, calling him "untouchable".

When we get further into the series, however, things are more difficult to measure considering Shino's very limited screentime during Shippuden. However, we know that during the war, he was able to easily defeat a White Zetsu (Naruto Shippuden Episode 279). Two White Zetsu were capable of trading blows with Asuma Sarutobi during a time where he was stated that to be almost as strong as Kakashi. Considering how Shino can one-shot them, he should be > Kakashi, giving us a solid range to measure his power on.

(That's baaaaaasically everyone besides the character on Naruto's tier of power)

Wriggle Nightbug

How strong is Wriggle Nightbug? (question no one has ever asked before) Well, scaling across Touhou Project is... a strange thing to do. The existence of the Spell Card Rule system basically makes it so that its impossible to know how powerful attacks and how serious duels are most of the time, but we have some stuff to work with.

You could say that most Touhou characters fall into specific "tiers" of power that they can be measured upon. Of course, there's the Incident Solvers tier, with characters like Reimu, Marisa, and Sakuya, the God tier with people Yukari and Okina, and... the fabled Cirno tier, consisting mostly of Stage 1 / 2 bosses like Wriggle. It makes sense, since according to ZUN himself, Wriggle is more comparable to Cirno than the playable characters, after all.

Weaknesses

Shino Aburame

Shino shares the same flaws as his fellow Shinobi. For instance, if he uses too much of his chakra in a short timeframe, he can drain himself of energy and end up in a bad spot. This is especially bad for him because his Kikaichū require a regular inflow of chakra in order to stay active, meaning that a prolonged fight could result in the death of his insects.

And naturally, his bugs are especially weak to fire-style attacks, which can burn them to crisps with ease. They also have issues with dealing against foes who are underwater, and can easily be dealt with that way, tough he did eventually evolve some of his Kikaichū to be water resistant.

Wriggle Nightbug

Rain, heat, fungi, insect repellent, flyswatters, bug zappers, and frogs. I'm only kind of joking, as Wriggle is in everything but her humanoid appearance actually a firefly (Albeit one with fantastic superhuman abilities), meaning that she shares all the traits of her kind. For instance, like other insects, Wriggle's brain automatically filters out any information it doesn't consider useful, making her more than quite forgetful.

Add onto that the fact that her childish optimism and general behaviour has a knack for getting her in trouble, as well as her willingness to challenge visibly stronger opponents just to prove herself. And finally, the girl has a 100% loss ratio. Speaks for itself. (Bring her back ZUN, we need more Wriggle Nightbug in our lives)

Summary

Shino Aburame

Advantages:
  • Stronger and more durable, potentially faaaar much so
  • Has the advantage should it come to hand to hand
  • More strategic, level-headed, and clever
  • His Kikaichū are generally more useful and versatile than any of Wriggles insects are
  • Since the Kikaichū feed on his specific chakra, Wriggle can't command them
  • Could maybe keep up with Wriggle via techniques like cloning and substitution
  • His Shippuden design (its fantastic)
  • He's so fucking cool oh my god I wish he did more curse you Kishimoto
Disadvantages:
  • Plot relevance
  • Either much slower or infinitely slower
  • Can't command Wriggle's insects
  • Is gonna have a hard time putting Wriggle down
  • Runs on a finite energy pool
  • His Boruto design (its awful)

Wriggle Nightbug

Advantages:
  • BALLING
  • Much faster either way you cut it
  • Commands a larger variety of bugs
  • Since Shino can only control his specific Kikaichū, he can't command her insects
  • Since she lacks chakra, Shino's Kikaichū likely can't drain her energy
  • Her regeneration makes her difficult to deal with
  • Doesn't have the issue of having to preserve chakra reserves
  • Has leagues better mobility simply via flight
  • Is Wriggle Nightbug and everyone loves Wriggle Nightbug she so awesome
  • Her alternate costume is dripped the fuck out
Disadvantages:
  • Plot relevance
  • Weaker and less durable
  • Her naivety and lack of strategy can get her in trouble quick
  • Can't command Shino's Kikaichū
  • Barely missed out on being in the fighting game

Verdicts

Loka Fåghel

I am genuinely shocked that I managed to string together a blog featuring characters with a combined screentime which would make Sauron blush and not have it feel shallow, but here we are! As much as I would love to claim creator for this matchup, I cannot remember if it was me or Chris who came up with it (it may have been Tsar?), but I've genuinely grown really fond of it, so lets dive into the details.

Starting with stays, Shino takes power and durability by a mile. Even disregarding the questionable scaling to BASE FORM NARUTO, Shino should solidly land in the high megatons to low gigatons of power levels, way above Wriggle's at best 16 megatons. With a power difference like that, Wriggle's regeneration would matter, because one solid hit would likely render her far more damaged than what she could ever come back from.

Except, that hit is gonna be hard to land, considering how with the way Touhou's lore and mechanics work, Wriggle should just be flat out infinitely faster than Shino, ensuring that he could literally never get a simple hit in on her. So, Shino can't hit Wriggle, but Wriggle can't kill Shino... right?

Well... no. There's a few wriggles (hehe) in there. Shino's clone and substitution tricks won't work, since youkai can see through illusions, neither can command the others bugs, and Wriggle has a far greater mobility advantage in that she can turn intangible and... well, fly. Wriggle also doesn't use chakra, so Shino can't drain her of her strength or even locate her from afar should she decide to gain some distance, which given that she's a Touhou, she'd more than favour.

Sure, Shino has projectiles as well, but nothing quite on the level of even the most basic of Touhou fights, and while danmaku aren't inherently lethal by themselves, the dozens of dozens of energy bullets would likely eventually wear him down, resulting in a hard fought, but well earned victory for our favourite firefly.

Or she could just sent some infinite speed mites down his throat and infects him with an incurable fatal disease. Less fancy, but also does the work.

But hey, don't be too bugged by it, Wriggle Nightbug was just too fly for our lad.

HeavenPiercerChris10

(if you mfs go "erm spiders aren't insects" I'm gonna Maximum Spider your ass)

As the reason this blog was being made I declare my verdict is LAW and all should obey me. Anyway Shino Aburame vs Wriggle Nightbug wooooooooo yeahhhh baybe

Giving credit where it's due, Shino has the advantage in raw power by miles. Comparing to Cirno is cool and all but it still means Wriggle Nightbug is fodder compared to the sheer level of power that other Touhou characters can achieve, she'd be nothing without the Spell Card system making shit fair. However, speed is a different story. While Naruto has plenty of feats far beyond the speed of light, I think it's perfectly fair to compare Wriggle to higher levels of speed in the verse. Obviously she's super weak and a Stage 1 boss, but speed isn't equalized with the Spell Card rules, and the ability to react quickly to danmaku is kind of the whole point of it all really. Wriggle has the speed edge by a lot, to the point where she could probably just wear Shino down eventually. And in terms of hax she almost hard counters Shino in most regards. There's nothing in her abilities that could be equalized to chakra, and she has the numbers advantage by miles since she can control all kinds of insects while Shino is limited to his own bugs. And while poison might be effective, it's hard to justify it working on a Yokai due to their more spiritual physiology.

in the end, WRIGGLE NIGHTBUG SWEEP YEAAAAAAH BAYBE WOOOOOO PUT HER IN THE NEXT FIGHTING GAME ZUN YOU COWARD LET'S GOOOOOOOOO

AnAustralianPerson

WOOOOOOO YYYYEEEEEAAAAHHHH SHINO VS WRIGGLE BABYYYYYY! (In all seriousness, thanks for having me Loka) anyways, debate time!

For strength, thanks to the magic of scaling and statements, Shino takes the dub, with even his mid-end strength eclipsing Wriggle's high-end (375 Mt vs 16.2 Mt). Even then, Shino's higher showing means that Wriggle shouldn't be able to put him down; point to Shino.

Next, speed, and here, Wriggle takes the W, because Wriggle's mid and high-ends with light-speed and infinite speed are a lot less tenuous than Shino; point to Wriggle.

And finally, the misc. section, which boils down to who can use their tricks to kill their opponent first. Shino's Substitution and Cloning Jutsus would be able to balance out Wriggle speed advantage over him... if it wasn't for the fact that Youkai can see through illusions. Wriggle has access to a much larger variety of bugs then Shino... however, her bugs are just regular bugs compared to the super-bugs that are the Kikaichū. Plus, both have a way to deal with poison, so that's a no-go for either. So, who does win here?

To me at least, Shino should be able to defeat Wriggle Nightbug thanks to a couple ways. Mainly, Shino's been training to fight with and without the Kikaichū for his entire life, and developed a few decent methods of trickery against people with immunity to illusions, such as the Insect Clone Technique and Temporary Paralysis Jutsu, which he could easily make sneaky use of to deal with Ms. Nightbug. Overall, though it is a tough battle, Shino managed to wriggle out a win.

Gman

WOW another one of these, crazy, thank you for having me Loka.

Unlike basically any of the blogs I've been in I'm going to start with speed, because it's obvious. Wriggle is faster. To my knowledge, nothing in Naruto gets to infinite speed and the fact that Wriggle scales to like three infinite speed feats is kinda 💀 for Shino

Now for strength, which I believe Shino should take no matter what. Scaling to city busting, a storm feat, a meteor feat, whereas Wriggle...is better than your average joe.

How is she faster if she's only in two games but weaker because she's been in only two games wh

DURABILITY, Shino takes that too. Idk who this Zaku guy is, but he seems strong and Shino just took a hit from bro like that, and Wriggle doesn't really like, have anything on that level.

granted she doesn't need it because of the

EVERYTHING ELSE. I think Wriggle has it, idk. Sure, Shino has his CHAKRA, and his NINJUTSU, and his BUGS, which like cool sure 👍 but like Wriggles....being a youkai kinda just gives her more advantages. Like

> Flight, which makes her infinitely more mobile
> Intangibility, which makes her infinitely harder to hit which would make Shino waste his chakra
> Regen, again a massive chakra waster
> Immunity to diseases which might screw over Shino's poison bugs.
Speaking of Bugs, Wriggle has them too, and Shino can't control them! Wriggle can't control his bugs either but hey he can get diseases from bug bites and she can't do whomp whomp. Also she has tons of danmakus which like, combined with her speed how the FUCK is Shino not getting overwhelmed

So, despite Shino's superior strength and durability, I feel like Wriggle, with her infinitely faster speed, just better physiology, and sheer amount of shit she can throw gives her the win.

It's about what I insected. Ge- get it, because insect, expect- whatever man I'm tired.
