Prediction Blog: John Wick vs Jacket

"The more you kill, the more you get better at it. And the better you get at killing, the less use you are for anything else." - Joe Abercrombie

John Wick, the legendary hitman Baba Yaga.

Jacket, Miami's infamous Masked Maniac.

Those who kill, do it for a reason. Some do it for money. Some do it for the excitement. Some do it for revenge. And some do it on the behalf of others. Whatever the case, if you're a person that someone wants dead, you better hope that whoever hunts you down isn't someone with a real good reason to do so. Because if they are, be assured that there's not a single thing you can hope to do to escape.

But when two unstoppable killing machines have a reason to end each other, who prevails? Will the masked maniac murders continue, or will Baba Yaga add another tale to his long list of legends? Let's find out!

Before we begin...

Not a lot to cover here. Wick will be mainly analysed from his movie series, it's comics, and it's two spin-off games: Chronicles and Hex, while Jacket meanwhile will be examined from his appearances in both Hotline Miami games as well as their comics. Adding to that, the both of them make appearances in Payday 2, so I'll throw that in as well for funsies. No Fortnite or Fall Guys scaling tho. Sorry lads.

Also major spoilers ahead but I can't imagine you're reading this blog without already knowing what you want to know about either character. You're not that stupid, are you? You better not be.

Background

John Wick

The criminal underworld is home to some of the deadliest human beings alive today, but as is with all groups, there has to be one that stands above all others. For there is a man so renowned, so sheer and utterly feared that no crime boss would ever risk having him come after them. They may call him the Baba Yaga, but he's not the boogeyman. He's the one you send to kill the fucking boogeyman; Jordani Jovonovich. Or as hes better known: John Wick.

John is a man of focus, commitment, and sheer will, known for being able to kill any target with any means. Hell, he once killed three people with a pencil, with a fucking pencil. Originally an orphan, John was adopted by the Ruska Roma mafioso and trained in the arts of killing, becoming one of their best assassins and eligible for joining the Continental, the international underworld hidden in the public eye.

But after some years of murderous murder, John met a woman named Helen, who would change his life. Having fallen in love and began desiring a new, more peaceful life, John requested to leave the assassin life behind. His current boss, Viggo Tarasov, wasn't a big fan of the idea, but he was willing to placate. And thus, he gave him what he considered an impossible task: kill each and every one of Tarasov's enemies in a single night. But with some aid from the Italian syndicate leader Santino D'Antonio, John completed his mission and earned the right to become a free man.

By all reasons, that's where his tale should have ended. Retired with his loving wife, they should have lived a long and peaceful life together. But destiny has a cruel way of playing pranks on us, and that prank came in the form of terminal cancer. After just five years together, John had lost Helen. But knowing that she was about to die, Helen had left behind a puppy for John so that he would not have to grieve all alone.

But fate wasn't done with John Wick. As a cruel twist of the knife, Viggo's own son Iosef happened to take an interest in John's car, and when he was refused to buy it, he did something really stupid. He broke into John's house, beat him unconscious, stole his car... and killed his dog. After losing everything he had left in the world to care about, John snapped, and his old self was reawakened. Less than six days later, Iosef, Viggo, and their entire squadron of armed men had all fallen to his bloodshed.

Now, John fucking Wick being back in business attracted a lot of attention from people. Most notably, our old friend Santino D'Antonio, who came to John and asked him to return the favour from long ago. Really wanting to get back to a peaceful life, he was politely declined. D'Antonio's response? Blow up his house. Knowing he couldn't risk refusing more, John accepted the mission to kill D'Antonio's sister. But hear this, after she was dead, D'Antonio wanted no more loose ends, and thus decided to place a bounty on John's head.

Long story short; Wick killed D'Antonio inside of the Continental, which earned him the declaration "Excommunicado", no longer allowing him their services and making anyone eligible to try and grab his bounty. John went to the Elder in an attempt to gain forgiveness, which he could earn back by killing his old friend Winston Scott (the Continental's owner), but refused once he got the opportunity, leading him to get shot and thrown off a rooftop. Of course, this didn't kill him.

Royally pissed off at just about everyone, John was helped by his associate the Bowery King, who had him nursed back to health in preparation for his war against the High Table, more specifically the Marqui Vincent Bissen de Gramon. After a long journey to regain his status at the Ruska Roma, John was allowed one last opportunity: a duel with Vincent, who choose John's old friend Caine to duel for him instead.

The two met in the sunset light of Sacré-Coeur, Paris, and commenced their duel. And in the end, John allowed himself to take a gunshot to the gut in order to suprise Vincent and shoot him dead instead. Exhausted from all the fighting, all the bloodshed, all the violence and untreated injuries, John ultimately succumbed to his wounds, finally for good leaving behind his life of pain and hatred, alongside a legacy that would never, ever be even close to contended.

Jacket

Picture this: you're at your home, doing whatever it is that you're doing, when someone calls your phone. You pick up, and through the hidden meanings of the message left there, you decipher what's said. Someone, for some reason, wants you to go to a location, and kill everyone inside. Now, what would you do in this situation?

If your name is Jacket (not actually his name), you'll do exactly as you're told to such a degree that the rest of the town is left in shock to the sheer and utter bloodshed that you've left behind. If your name isn't Jacket... well, good for you.

While the majority of the history behind this masked manic isn't known to us, we know that he served in the military during the Hawaii conflict between the US and Soviet Union as a member of the Ghost Wolves, an elite taskforce considered among the best on the planet, alongside his good friend Beard. The two were quite close, which came in full when Jacket was heavily wounded by an exploding Russian power plant, with Beard barely managing to save his life and entrusted with him an important keepsake between the two, a polaroid picture of them.

After their war services, the two kept in touch despite moving to opposite ends of the states. A few years later immediately following a phone call between the two about said picture, Beard was obliterated by a Soviet nuclear bomb destroying San Fransisco, leaving Jacket with no friends, and a deepened hatred for the Russians.

Fuelled by anger and a desire for revenge, which was only further fuelled by a new peace treaty between the US and USSR to try and leave their past behind them, Jacket contacted the organisation 50 Blessings, a terrorist group seeking to topple the Coalition through violent means. And so began his services for the group, who would leave phonecalls on his answering machine detailing his instructions, travelling to numerous Soviet headquarters in Miami and slaughtering everyone he could find.

On one of these... escapades, Jacket wound up saving a girl from the Russian Mafia, who began living with him. Despite still continuing his work, this marked a shift in his life, as he began to once again no longer be alone in the world. But this changed when the assassin Richter was sent after him, who killed his girlfriend and put him into a coma. After waking up, Jacket confronted Richter and found out that presumably just like him, Richter had been controlled from behind the scenes by 50 Blessings.

Leaving Richter alive, Jacket sought for the true mastermind behind the phonecalls, which lead him right back to the Russians. He then systematically slaughtered every last remaining person of importance within it, taking down their leader and ending their influence in Miami for good. With both Beard and girlfriend avenged, Jacket tossed the polaroid into the wind, finally ready to move on into a different life.

But that moment of victory wasn't representative of how Jacket's life would continue forwards. At some point afterwards, he was arrested and put into jail, where he was sentenced to spend the rest of his days. Even worse, it turns out that the Russians weren't behind the phonecalls at all, and Jacket's rampage had only allowed the real masterminds to continue their influence and subtly manipulate the world leaders. Never having known the truth behind his delusions or the real reasons behind his killings, Jacket was cast in solitude once more, where he would remain as he and the rest of Miami were vapourised by an atomic bomb when the world broke out into nuclear war, leaving nothing left.

Powers and Abilities

John Wick

Hand to Hand Combat

Wick throws hands. Having been trained since he was a child by some of the best assassins in the world, it's no shocker that he picked up on some pretty gnarly combat skills. Although we've never been told what exact styles he knows, we can look at the man who played him for that information.

In preparation for the movie, Keanu Reeves learnt mainly Jujitsu and Judo, styles focused on grappling and subduing foes with their own body weight for a quick takedown. He has also practiced Karate, Krav Maga, Kung Fu, Silat, and Kali, all of which cover the basises of weapon combat, open palm strikes, gunplay, and more. Basically, don't fight him, or he'll kick your ass seven ways to Sunday. And don't fight Wick either.

Marksmanship

Befitting his workplace, John is nothing less than a master with any type of firearm. Wether it be at a distance, close up, mixed in with his martial arts, from moving vehicles and on horseback, or when under heavy fire, be sure that he'll never be outgunned. Even shooting entire rooms full of enemies isn't a biggie for him.

Precision & Anatomy Knowledge

Thanks to his training and experience, John has expert knowledge over the the human body, allowing him to target specific weak points in his targets and use them to his advantage. Wether it be utilising pressure points and groin attacks, or stabbing someone precisely enough that they'll bleed out if they remove the weapon, John knows how to get around any target and take them down as effectively as needed.

Stealth & Assasination Skills

Bro got that Jason Voorhees teleport

It shouldn't be shocking that the world's best assassin can play hide and seek well. John is a master at clearing out large groups of people without them noticing, even killing people in full view of public places with no one laying an eye on him. He can even completely vanish into thin air, or dissappear out of view from trained warriors who can do the same like Zero.

Hitman Perk Deck

In PayDay 2, characters are given specific attributes based upon what type of criminal they are. John is listed as a hitman, and thus has access to the following perks:
  • Basic Recovery: John's armour (Defence) recovery rate is increased above the usual by 5%.
  • Ambidexterity: All John's duel wielding weapons have a -16 penalty and a 50% increase in ammo. His armour recovery rate has an additomal increament by 10%.
  • Advanced Recovery: John's armour recovery rate is increased by an addtional 10%.
  • Expert Recovery: John's armour recovery rate is increased by an additional additional 10%
  • Tooth and Claw: John's armour recovery rate is increased by an additional additional ADDITIONAL 10%. His armour is also automatically restored after 1.5 seconds if broken.

Jacket

Hand to Hand Combat

While most of the time you're gonna see him carrying a weapon of some sort, Jacket is also more than capable of resorting to the most simplistic of weapons: his fists. Although he usually resorts to simple punches and kicks, it's likely that he has at least some sort of training from his time in the military.

Hotline Miami's fictional Hawaiian Conflict takes place in the 1980's, a time at which the US military taught its soldiers SCARS, or Special Combat Aggresive Reactionary System. SCARS's main focus is on “human movement and psychological survival under do-or-die conditions”, and works in a mixture of grapples, leverages, and defences against weapons for an all-arounder type of combat.

Marksmanship

Shocker, the former war veteran from an elite taskforce considered better then entire armies knows how to wield a gun. Jacket is basically magic when he gets a firearm in his hands, wether it be pistols, assault rifles, shotguns, you name it. Thanks to his super accuracy (and the games lock-on function) he can snipe enemies from entire rooms and hallways away with ease, as well as attack dogs mid-charge and kill several opponents with the same bullet.

Stealth & Assasination Skills

If you know, you know.

Likely thanks to his war days, Jacket is really good at remaining hidden and killing foes just as effectively as if he was rushing in guns blazing. He's infiltrated numerous buildings owned by the Russian Mafia all lined with dozens of armed guards (including their head quarters), once escaped a highly secured hospital while undergoing heavy physical and mental trauma and then broke into a police station the literal day after, managed to escaped from a building while it was in the process of being stormed by a SWAT Team, and despite killing several hundreds of people and gaining regular newspaper headlines, he NEVER GOT CAUGHT until he finished his mission and presumably gave himself up to the police.

Sociopath Perk Deck

In PayDay 2, characters are given specific attributes based upon what type of criminal they are. Jacket is listed as a sociopath (fair), and thus has access to the following perks:
  • Overdo: When surrounded by three enemies, Jacket takes 12% less damage form enemy attacks. Each of his consecutive melee hits following the first successful will also deal 10 times their normal damage. Missing an attack resets the buff.
  • Tension: When Jacket kills an enemy, he regenerates 30 armour (Defence).
  • Clean Hit: If Jacket kills an enemy with a melee weapon he will regenerate 10% of his health. Also, when he is within medium range of an emerny, he takes 8% less damage.
  • Overdose: If Jacket kills an enemy at medium range, he will recover 30 armour. He also gains 10% additional armour overall.
  • Slowdown: When Jacket kills an enemy at medium range, there is a 75% chance for Panic to spread to other enemies. Panic will cause them to go into short hiersts of uncontrollable fear.

Equipment

John Wick

Bulletproof Suit

John Wick is literally dressed to kill. Since his line of work means he's always got a chance of getting shot, these custom built suits have saved his skin on more occasions than he could count. The standard version is designed with a mixture of carbon discs, ceramics, and laminates, capable of blocking any matter of gunfire even from closer ranges. At the beginning of Chapter 4, the Bowery King outfitted him with an even better suit, outfitted with kevlar from front to back, so it should naturally be MUCH more durable.

Belt

As a true showcase how you should never think you have John Wick backed against the wall, he can use his belt as a surprisingly good melee weapon, capable of defending against knives and attacking like a whip.

Painkillers

Given to him by Doctor in case his stitches tear. According to him, and he's a medical professional so he's gotta be right, just two of these will keep Wick functioning perfectly even if he begins bleeding out.

Bandages

Wick's way to restore health in John Wick: Hex. By applying bandages, he'll be able to heal himself right back up to peak condition, though the more damaged he is, the longer it takes to heal fully.

Alcohol

For the pain. (Physically and mentally)

Firearms

Heckler & Koch P30L

John's most consistent primary firearm used across all four movies. The gun is outfitted with a custom design to give Wick a better control over its fire rate, and carries 15 rounds of 9x21mm ammo. As seen above, John has at least two of them.

Glocks

During the events of the movies, John has carried several different types of Glocks, such as the 26 (wielded in the nightclub shootout in the first movie), the 34 (ex. wielded in the catacombs in Chapter 2), the 17 (ex. wielded in the subway in Chapter 2), the 19 (ex. wielded in the glass house in chapter 3), the 19X (ex. wielded against the Casablanca in chapter 3), and the 17L (ex. wielded against Caine in chapter 4).

Kimber Warrior

Given to him by the Bowery King, the Kimber Warrior is an automatic handgun outfitted with CCI mags. Seven of them, to be exact. Seven bullets for seven million dollars.

Smith & Wesson SW1911SC

Used in the subway fight against Cassian, this handgun carries 7 - 8 rounds of .45 c auto ammo, and thanks to its attached silencer, John can fire it even in public without alerting attention.

TTI STI 2011 Combat Master

John's main weapon used in the shootout at the Continental in Chapter 3, recommended to him by his good friend Charon and packing 21 rounds of 9x21mm major bullets.

Remington 1875

As far as custom weapons go, you can't get more than this one. When John was in need of a new weapon, this Remington 1875 didn't quite fit his ammo into it, so he decided to do some arts and crafts. Using parts from a Colt 1851 Navy and 1860 Army with the Remington as a base, Wick constructed a fully customised gun that fires .44-40 cartridges.

TTI Pit Viper

Another weapon given by the Bowery King, this one at the very beginning of Chapter 4, where John uses it as his main weapon for the rest of the film. Due to its customisable nature, the exact modifications of John's gun are unknown. Doesn't really matter, it's job is to shoot people, and that's what it does.

Thompson Center Arms Contender

Used in his final climactic duel with Caine, and thus the final weapon ever used by John, this beauty of a single-shot handgun is usually wielded by hunters, packing enough power to down large animals with one shot. It sure packs a punch, considering one clean shot from it was enough to take John himself down.

Kel-Tec KSG

Taken from his little hideyhole, Wick uses this shotgun in his pursuit against Viggo in the first movie. In Chronicles, he has one with a laser sight.

Benelli M2 Super 90

John swapped his TTI STI Combat Master pit for this one when the handgun wasn't able to do the required damage. Rest to be sure, this shotgun outfitted with specific armour piercing shells absolutely did.

Coharie CA-415

A heavy caliber combat rifle designed to take down several targets in quick succession, showcased when John used it in the church in the first movie.

TR-1 Ultralight

Wielded in the Catacombs, the Ultralight is compensated with an iron-bounded Bolt Varrier, Trijicon Accupoint 1-6 scope. If you don't speak gun, that means it's designed for accurate shots in rapid succession.

TTI SIG-Sauer MPX Carbine

Another weapon used in the Continental fight. Having an MRO Sight, the MPX Carbine risks accuracy for more centralised firepower, shooting 13 rounds of 9x19mm ammunition. Also, a good throwing weapon.

Spike's Tactical Compressor

Used in Chapter 4, the tactical Compressor Rifle has access to nearly 1500 rounds, meaning it can spray down any amount of targets coming John's way.

SMG

Used in the VR game, Chronicles. I have no way of telling what exact type of smg it is, but it has a laser sight so that's pretty cool.

DTA Stealth Recon Scout

A sniper rifle stolen from Iosef's guards, and used against them to take them all down instead. In Chronicles, he uses one that has an unique thermal scoping for spotting heat signatures.

Other Weapons

Grenades

Obtained in Chronicles, usually after catching them from an enemy. They blink and flash red a few seconds before exploding, which tells me that these are not based on any actual real life grenades. At least not any that I know of.

Incindery Grenades

Likely of the AN/M14 variety, John has never actually used these offensively, only to burn Viggo's money. Still, there's no reason he shouldn't be able to, and these things can quickly set any flammable material ablaze.

Remote Explosives

When Wick has the ability to preplan, he'll stick a number of remote explosives on your supposed-to-be escape vehicles and blow them to kingdom come. He can detonate these whenever he wants.

Knives

His preferred melee weapon, Wick has utilised several different knives during the movies, not just for close ranged fighting, but also as deadly projectiles.

Wakizashi

A blade wielded by one of John's greatest foes (and biggest fanboys), Zero. After a long battle, John stole the sword and killed Zero with his own blade, leaving it stuck in his chest.

Nunchucks

I'm not exaggerating when I say that John is probably trained with every single weapon on the planet, which he decided to prove himself when he whipped out a pair of nunchucks of all things. Although they seem impractical and are hard to master, a good pair of nunchucks are extremely potent weapons for taking down any foe.

Metal Pipe

CLANG

John's primary melee weapon during the comic run. It's a metal pipe. Good for hitting people.

No. 2 Pencil

He once killed three people with a pencil. A FUCKING PENCIL. Who the hell does that???

Car

Wick Car
Wick Car

The thing that lead to the entire movie series happening in the first place, John's iconic car is the 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429, outfitted with 374 Horsepower and capable of reaching speeds upwards of 118 miles per hour.

PayDay 2

Masks
  • Daisy: Modelled after the dead dog given to him by Helen. A constant reminder to what he lost and the people responsible for it.
  • Hotelier: Modelled after the Continental in reception to those who follow its rules.
  • Zaschita: A mask designed with the specific intent of protecting both Wick's identity and his face. Somewhat bulletproof, but to an unknown degree.
  • Mustang: Modelled after his car. Vroom vroom motherfuckers.
Primary:
  • Akimbo Contractor: A set of semi-automatic dual pistols that John can wield with one on each hand. Has a total ammo of 90 with magazine size of 30, providing higher damage and rate of fire than normal handguns are capable of. Can be modified with an extended magazine and titanium sight.
  • Desertfox: A bullpup sniper rifle capable of one-shotting men in heavy armour thanks to its ludicrous 480 damage. To compensate, it has an extremely long reload time. Can be modified to have a silencer.
Secondary:
  • Contractor: A single version of his Akimbo Contractors, giving John a free hand to work with alongside the gun. Shares stats and modifications.
  • Jackal: A compact SMG with toggable selective firing for either accuracy or damage, making it a good mixup tool. The barrel, magazine, and stock can all be modified, and it can have a silencer.
Throwable:
  • Throwing Knife: It's a knife that can be thrown. John can start with up to six of them (assuming you bought the dlc!).

Jacket

Jacket

It's his namesake. Appears to have no special attributes.

Masks

Richard

The iconic cockhead himself. Being the default mask that Jacket uses, it doesn't offer him any special perks or attributes. An interesting potential tidbit however is that since most of the killers in the sequel shares names with their corresponding masks from the first game, it's possible that Richard is Jacket's real name.

But hey! That's just a

Rasmus

With bright yellow eyes and a brighter temperament, the Rasmus mask allows for Jacket to more easily notice hidden details and secrets, as they'll gain a slight glow. What this would translate to in a non-game scenario is unknown.

Tony

It's gr-r-r-r-r-r-eat! By far the most broken mask in terms of gameplay, Tony allows for Jacket to square the fuck up, boosting his physical strength to the point where he can one shot any enemy he comes across. Unlike the man himself, Jacket is still capable of picking up weapons when wearing it, leaving him with the best of both worlds for close and long range.

Aubrey

Famously belonging to that absolute piece of shit Martin Brown, Aubrey's boons are quite simple to explain: more guns. All it does is cause many, many more firearms to spawn all over the map. Sounds like a sweet deal, but it's worth remembering that enemies can also use these weapons. In Hotline Miami 2's level editor, it simply makes Jacket start the level with a double barreled shotgun instead.

Don Juan

The last mask to share visage with one of the voices in Jacket's head (More on that later), Don Juan allows for Jacket to open doors VERY harshly, so much so that if anyone is struck by a door he's opening, they will instantly die.

Graham

This is my least favourite mask in the game. Just look at the ugly thing.

Graham simply provides Jacket with a boost in his movement speed, 25% to be specific.

Dennis

Quite possibly the most easy to explain mask on the list, Dennis simply allows Jacket to start the level with a knife equipped. In terms of a vs scenario... I guess it just magics a knife into existence when he puts it on or smth idk.

George

Grants Jacket increased sight, enought to be able to watch over an entire floor at once. Since it's a giraffe, the only logical explanation is that it extends Jacket's neck to ludicrous extents.

Ted

Apparently, this mask provides so good and authentic of a disguise that attack dogs trained by the Russian Mafia will no longer recognise Jacket as an enemy and attack him... somehow.

He'll still have to kill them to finish the levels tho

Rufus

Quite the nice looking mask, Rufus gives Jacket a much needed boost in defence, allowing for him to withstand an extra bullet before dying (allegedly). In Hotline Miami 2's level editor, it allows Jacket to withstand three extra bullets instead.

Rami

If Jacket feels like he runs out of ammunition too fast, he can use Rami to change that! Once he puts this mask on, his guns will now all magically carry 1/3 more ammo than they are physically capable of. Sweet deal!

The exact ammo boons are:
  • Assault Rifle: 32/24
  • Double Barrel Shotgun: 3/2
  • Shotgun: 8/6
  • Silenced Pistol: 18/13

Willem

Monkey see, monkey do. Willem is quite the rapscallion, and lets Jacket instantly steal the weapons of any enemy he kills with a stealth kill. That may not sound so useful, but in a hectic infiltration mission, every second spared matters.

Peter

Peter the unicorn really likes killing people, but he doesn't like to be heard when doing it. That's why, with the powers of his magical horn, he suppresses the sound of Jacket's gunshots, allowing for stealthier kills than would be normally possibly.

Zack

Increases Jacket's kill combo window.

This means nothing.

Oscar

Quite possibly the single least useful mask that Jacket could pick if he wants to try and kill someone. Befitting it's animal inspirations lack of vision, Oscar turns everything Jacket sees into a virtual boy-esque red and black filter. It's really cool, but very impractical.

Rick

If Jacket ever feels insecure about his aiming skills, he can equip cheat codes. Rick here turns all of Jacket's firearms into insta-kill weapons that'll take out any foe in one hit.

Unless they're wearing body armour.

Yeah you thought this was gonna be the win con right there didn't you. Fucking dumbass.

Brandon

Remember Graham, the really ugly rabbit? Well, Brandon is like the good version of Graham. Originally worn by Jacket's general back in Hawaii and made out of an actual panther that madman skinned, Brandon boosts Jacket's movement speed even further! While Graham is a 25% increase, Brandon is a... well it doesn't have an official increase but it's fast okay.

Charlie

The first mask to not be obtained by Jacket, but by Biker instead. Somehow, Jacket still has access to them tough. Neat. Charlie is basically the inverse of Aubrey, instead causing more melee weapons to spawn.

Louie

Louie here is pretty chill, and befitting the fact that he's a chameleon and all, he boosts Jacket's stealth skills, making it more difficult for enemies to spot him.

Phil

Okay so this is the funniest shit in the world. Not only is this a pogging fish named PHIL, but it's passive ability it turning the entire game French. And not JUST FRENCH, BUT INTENTIONALLY POORLY TRANSLATED FRENCH. Genuinely the funniest shit this is how Jacket will beat Wick.

Nigel

The super cool true ending bonus reward, Nigel... reverses Jacket's controls. Eat shit, I guess.

Earl

Remember Rufus the elephant? Well, this is like his cooler cousin. Not just because he's a walrus and walruses are awesome, but also because he allows Jacket to withstand three bullets instead of one, and ALSO because this one actually works as intended! Good job, developers.

Jones

Hey, you. Do you like hurting other people? Yeah? Do you like hurting other people but with EVEN MORE BLOOD? THEN THE JONES MASK IS FOR YOU. FLUDN AT YOUR ENAREST BODY DISSOLVING IN THE SEREWS, JONES WILL SPICE UP YOUR KILLING LIFE AND ALLOW YOUR TO SEE ALL KIDNS OF BEW GORE AND BLOOSSHED ITS FUCKING COLL AMN I LOVE VIOLEBCE

I'm not fixing any of those spelling errors fuck you

Carl

Carl got ratioed on the club floor. As seen in this officially-supported fan comic, Carl was 50 Blessings operative who wielded a power drill as a weapon. Jacket gains this same drill when wearing his mask, continuing the legacy of an absolute legend.

Jake

Originally owned by Jake, who's certainly one of the characters of all time. This slippery snakey mask increases Jacket's throwing arm, to the point where any thrown weapon is capable of inflicting fatal damage.

Richter

You know what they say about good times. Used by the 50 Blessings operative who killed Jacket's girlfriend, Richter allows Jacket to start the level with a silenced uzi as an exclusive weapon.

Russel

And finally, the mask that everyone besides the PC players can use, Russel gives Jacket the vision of a charging bull, causing him to see the entire world for the black and white mess that it really is.

kind of an uneventful last one huh

Firearms

Silenced Pistol

The primary weapon of choice for anyone who wants to kill without being heard, mostly carried by bodyguards and assassins. The silenced pistol that Jacket can use appears to be a Berreta M92FS carrying 13 rounds and most useful for stealthy kills due to its low damage output. Despite that, it's still potent enough to kill people through solid glass windows.

Machine Gun

For heavier altillery, the Colt M16A3 automatic assault rifle (yeah, not actually a machine gun) is instead useful for mowing down large groups of enemies at once with its powerful 24 magazine 5.56 NATO cartridges. This type of weapon is commonly used by the US Marine Force, so it's likely that Jacket has extra proficiency with them considering his time in the military.

Kalashnikov

Available to Jacket only through Hotline Miami 2's level editor, the Kalashnikov is the classic  Russian AK-47 gas operated assault rifle, used for more than seven decades since its creation. Compared to the gun above, the AK fires at a slower rate with less accuracy, but deals a lot more damage to targets, making it a better overall weapon for managing ammo.

Shotgun

Oh, the beautiful Mossberg 500 Cruiser, one of the most lovely tools to use when massacring your enemies. Just about every enemy in the game can carry this, and it's not suprise why, with its surprisingly good utility at both range and close up, a single shot from this beauty is enough to paint the walls red.

Double-Barrelled Shotgun

The Baikal Double Barrel holds quite a number of differences from its other version. Due to its eponymous double barrels, it fires two shots at once for more damage, but unfortunately only carries a fraction of the ammunition thanks to its required manual reload.

Uzi

I've never been a fan of these things, but Jacket seems to like them. The Uzi is characterised by its unique ammo compartment that allows the weapon to be smaller and thus more easily tucked away, as well as a fairly unpredictable rate of fire curtesy of its 9x21mm cartridges low damage output.

Silenced Uzi

The signature weapon of Richter, and only available to Jacket when wearing his mask, this weapon is the classic Uzi but with a silencer attached for stealthier kills. Bet you never predicted that.

Skorpion

A weapon similar to the Uzi in many ways, such as its small size, but has a lower rate of fire than it and, let's be real, a better design.

MP5

Jacket's final automatic firearm is the MP5A3, a tiny little gun not too dissimilar to the large assault rifles he also carries. With a 32 cartridge magazine, it will be sure to mow down any target.

Magnum

Saving the best for last, Jacket can pick up this Smith & Wesson Model 29 revolver handgun, a classic western sixshooter with powerful bullets that can strike down several targets with one shot. With its precise and straight shots, it's the perfect weapon for long-range lock-ons and for feeling like an absolute badass. Too bad it only carries six bullets.

Other Weapons

Baseball Bat

Batter up! The most classic of melee weapons and the first we ever see Jacket using, baseball bats have a long history of hitting homeruns, smashing windows, and breaking people's skulls open. A fun tidbit is that Jacket swings the bat faster than any other playable character in the games. Guess he just really likes baseball, huh.

Lead Pipe

CLANG

Faster, longer, and much funnier than the bat, the lead pipe is the ideal melee weapon for all underpaid mafia rooks who are inevitably gonna end up with their own weapon slamming their skull in. Give the fact that it's, you know, made out of lead, it probably hits pretty damn hard too.

Knife

It's a knife! A short-ranged and quick bladed weapon best used for silent kills and fast executions. It also works really good as a throwing weapon, useful for slitting throats from a distance.

Katana

My personal favourite weapon in the game, the katana is a... chokutō! (Yeah, not katana. Note the lack of a curved edge). Being a classic sword, Jacket can use to to slice his foes to kingdom come. With the amount of blood spread everywhere, it'll feel like you're playing fruit ninja!

Machete

A shorter katana, a longer knife, doesn't matter, the machete will serve quite useful regardless. It's Jacket's fastest melee weapon by a noticeable margin.

Fireaxe

Useful for chopping down fires, and probably people as well. The fireaxe is a very powerful weapon, and when wielded by the right hands, it can break down any target. Jacket has the right hands.

Shuriken

Think fast chucklenuts. Shuriken ninja stars are bladed throwing weapons designed to target unprotected vital areas like eyes and throats. As thus, it has no viability at melee range, but with Jacket's skill and accuracy, is almost a guaranteed killing move at distance.

Scissors

It's at this point in this blog that I'm realising how much of a mistake it was to give each weapon a designated section, but I'm still gonna stick with it because I'm stubborn. This is a pair of scissors. Surprisingly good at slitting throats.

Hammer

When Jacket feels like it's hammer time, he can use one himself to bash people's heads I'm like they were spikes on a board. But when he REALLY feels like it...

Sledgehammer

...he brings out the BIG BOY. More than massive enough to turn your head into mush, the sledgehammer is one of Jacket's strongest weapons, and boy does it FEEL like it when you use it to send someone's body parts flying to Texas.

Golf Club

One of the few weapons that Jacket actually uses canonically, that being in his battle against Biker, where he used it to whack the dudes head clean off. (kind of. not really. it's a long story).

Baton

Stolen from a police officer that he's just violently beaten to death, baton's are great for quick and powerful strikes. In real life, police grade batons have shown capable of breaking bones, fracturing skulls, and rupturing internal organs. There's a statement I could make here. I won't.

Crowbar

POV Jason Todd:

Usually made out of some form of carbon steel, crowbars are durable and strong tools, most often used to prey things open or aid in moving heavy objects. If you're Jacket, it can also work as a great bashing weapon. Funnily enough, he only ever uses the blunt side of it to kill people.

Pool Cue

One of the most fun weapons in the game. The pool cue has two states; the first one being the whole state that Jacket picks it up in, where it serves as a normal bashing weapon. But once he hits someone with it, it breaks and turns into a sharp one time stabbing weapon instead.

Brick

It's a fucking brick

Glass Bottle

Glass is one of the earliest known weapons used by humans once they moved on from basic stone tools, and it's not hard to see why. With the right mending, glass can make an extremely sharp and durable cutting weapon. Take this glass bottle. While it works as a solid blunt weapon, shattering part of it also makes for an efficient stabbing tool.

Beer Can

Jacket's only weapon that he can't actually kill with. Probably bud light.

Dart

Like I mentioned earlier, Jacket has a very keen sense of aiming and accuracy. This means he can do things like, say, throw a dart through someone's head. Potentially.

Frying Pan

In one level of the game, Jacket gets to live my lifelong dream of hitting someone in the face with a frying pan so hard that their brain ends up splattered across the walls. Sorry, too much detail.

Pot

If the frying pan isn't your thing, then why don't you try this pot! Chilling atop a stove, this thing is full of nice boiling water. Take one guess as to what Jacket does with it.

Drill

Accessible via the Carl mask, the electric drill is a pretty neat weapon. Jacket uses the back of it as a blunt weapon (probably to save on the battery), and will then drill into felled foes skulls for a gorey double tap kill.

Taser

The final weapon that Jacket can only access through Hotline Miami 2's level editor, this baby isn't just any normal taser. See, while most tasers available to law enforcement (the enemies found using this weapon) have a max output of 1200 volts, THESE ones are powerful enough to kill a grown man with a single zap! That'd require energy of at the very least 2,700 volts, but could even be as high as 11,000. I don't know what that means, but it sounds like a lot!

Briefcase

On his very first mission organised by 50 Blessings, Jacket was sent to retrieve this briefcase and dispose of it. On the way, he met some thugs, and truly showcased how good he is at turning anything he gets in his hands into a lethal weapon.

Trophy

Taken directly from the headquarters of the Father of the Russian Mafia, Jacket used this trophy to, and I am not exaggerating, beat two panthers to death. Because that's a normal thing to do.

Car

Jacket Car
Jacket Car

His main method of getting to and home from his mass killing events, Jacket drives an Acado GT that ends up heavily vandalised by the end of the game. Being a fictional car brand, I can't say anything else about it.

PayDay 2

Masks
  • Alex: One fifth of the Fans, one half of the brother and sister duo. One likes guns, the other likes chainsaws.
  • Biker: The absolute goat. Rides a motorcycle and swings cleavers around.
  • Corey: The hot one. She rolls.
  • Jake: is racist.
  • Richter: I feel like we've talked about this one already.
  • Tony: oh yeah, we ABSOLUTELY talked about this one already.
Secondary
  • Jacket's Piece: An altered Mark 101 fit for Jacket's murders. With a much higher rate of fire and more accessible sight, it's a solidly good weapon, althought the recoil is a little hard to control. Can be customised to have a slotted barrel extension, a suppressor, or some cool camouflage. Neat!

Support

John Wick

Winston Scott

John Wick doesn't carry a lot of weapons on hand very often, yet he still always seems to have access to them. Why is this, you ask? Well allow me to introduce you to Winston Scott, owner of the New York City Continental and one of John's oldest associates.

The Continental server as a neutral ground in the underworld, where no criminal business of any kind is allowed. But more important for John, it houses its own personalised weaponry, stacked from bottom to top with dozens upon dozens of weapons. And thanks to their companionship, Winston is more than willing to offer John whatever he may need at any given time. That being guns. Lots of guns. Whatever the time or occasion, one quick visit to Winston should give John access to all of his full weaponry loadout.

Jacket

Don Juan, Richard, and Rasmus

Well, maybe "support" isn't really the right term

Wearing the masks they share names with, these three mysterious figures make appearances within Jacket's mind and talk to him at several intervals during his coma dream. Don Juan and Rasmus are supposedly the representation of Jacket's amity and hostility to the world around him respectively, but the real star is Richard. His real deal isn't exactly known, but he shows up for several people connected to the Miami killings, acting as a sort of second conscience inside of their mind to either blur or help them distinguish between what is and isn't real.

For Jacket, Richard appears when he is in a coma, seemingly trying to push him to remember who he is and to wake up. Once he does, Richard doesn't appear again.

Jacket

Overall

Strength

Speed

  • Can clear out an entire buildings worth of people in mere seconds.
  • Can run really fast. (184 m/s) (222 m/s with Brandon mask) (Mach 0.6)
  • Can hit attack dogs and charging jaguars mid-sprint.
  • Can avoid some shots from pistols and rifles... when the game feels like it.
  • Can throw objects across rooms really quickly. (720 m/s) (Mach 2)
  • Potentially comparable to the Fans, who can fight Dodgers that are capable of dodging gunfire.

Durability

Weaknesses

John Wick

It truly is difficult to find concrete weaknesses in a man like John Wick, but he is still, as hard as it may be to acknowledge, a mortal man who isn't immune to harm and only slightly harder to kill than your average super trained assassin. He has a tendency to act irrationally at times, such as killing Santino D'Antonio inside the Continental and getting himself Excommunicado despite knowing the risks. This sometimes comes through in his fights, as he finds himself close to death on several occasions and lived for as long as he did largely due to luck. He often also forgets to keep track of his ammo, forcing him to reload in undesirable situations.

And while it may seem like the ultimate defence, his bulletproof suit isn't perfect. While it can stop bullets from entering his body, John will still feel the pain of getting shot, and heavier artillery such as armour piercing should be able to get through it. Also, it doesn't cover his head, so... yeah.

Jacket

Jacket is renowned as a one man army for good reason, but it's his tendency to rely on that fact and rush head first into danger that's his biggest flaw. Most of the time, the man doesn't even arm himself before heading into conflict after all, and he's not exactly careful when it comes to taking down his foes. He also really likes taking his time when killing his victims, if the execution animations are anything to go off, which means he could easily be taken off guard by a suprise attack.

The guy is also... well, fucking nuts. The latter part of the game we literally take control of him after he's escaped from being hospitalised without undergoing proper treatment, after all. Even before that, the the man clearly has some sort of PTSD lingering in his head from both the war and the deaths of his loved ones. It's this that allowed 50 Blessings to manipulate him so thoroughly, and a smart and experienced opponent could certainly take advantage of it.

Jacket

Advantages:
  • Likely stronger when measuring only physical strength, especially with Tony.
  • Faster on foot, especially with Brandon.
  • Larger variety of different weapons.
  • Rufus and Earl masks guarantee that he won't instantly die from Wick's shots if he can hide quickly enough to avoid followups.
  • Most likely at least somewhat even in reactions.
  • Throwing speed is faster. (Probably an advantage)
Disadvantages:
  • Also dead damn
  • Masks that spawn more weapons would also help Wick.
  • Most weapons have similar effects.

Before the verdicts

Jacket's Delusions - Hotline Miami Canon?

Being the main protagonist of the first game, the vast majority of its story is showcased from Jacket's point of view. Now, if you haven't picked up on it by now, Jacket is a little wacky in the head, making it kind of questionable exactly how much of what we go through in the game is canonical. That by itself wouldn't be enough for a specific deep dive like this, but we know for a fact from the sequel that Biker and Jacket both explicitly survived their encounter, despite the fact that no matter who's point of view you follow, one of them dies. We as a player also get choices that are non-canon in the sequel, such as killing Richter.

So, how much of the game is actually depicted accurately? Well, interestingly enough, we actually have a pretty solid answer. In the 11th chapter of the game, Jacket is shot by Richter, and we find out in the following chapter that this ends up with him in a coma, which he wakes up from to escape the hospital without being properly treated. This implies that all the chapters before this are a mix of coma-induced hallucinations based on his memories (which would explain things like Beard being alive in them, the Jacket vs Biker fight's odd ending, and Richter's appearances when Jacket hasn't met him yet).

Everything following chapter 11 is likely depicted accurately. This doesn't really matter too much in terms of strictly analysing Jacket for a vs match, since everything he does in his coma dreams is stuff he showcases to be able to do post waking up from it, but I thought it was an interesting topic to take a look at anyways since I know that it confused me during my first playthrough of the game a decent bit.

Verdicts

Loka

I made this blog in two weeks.

I promised a friend of mine I'd check out Hotline Miami and make this blog like 8 months ago. Oh well, better late than never! And yeah, man, its an incredible series. What I wasn't expecting is to love John Wick even more, but both are amazing and have shot this matchup way up to become one of my favourites of all time.

Anyhow, the verdict. Now, I'm gonna be crystal clear here. There are 9 total verdicts in this blog, so I don't really feel like I need to go as in depth as the others probably are about to. Partly because I don't think this is a super complicated matchup. Jacket is far stronger. John may be able to shatter bulletproof glass, but he ain't ripping jaws off with one hand. John is far tougher. Jacket can at best survive being close to a big explosion, but John can stroll out of a car crash kaboom no worse for wear. Neither can rely on these advantages for the win.

As far as speed goes... yeah, I don't know. Jacket's faster on foot, but that's hardly gonna help in either a gun or melee fight, and while he can throw stuff super fast, those speeds are still below the average bullet, which John can dodge. I'll just put speed as comparable. With that, neither has a distinctive advantage, meaning they could likely end the fight with one shot... yeah, you can tell where this is going.

It's the suit. John's suit is just bullshit. Fucking thing is made out of kevlar for God's sake, so Jacket has literally no way to get through it. Sure, he could shoot John in the head maybe, but that's still a small part of his body (plus, he gets a bulletproof mask in Payday so like...)

And when it comes to hand to hand, stealth, precision, or endurance, John takes all categories by a mile. Add on the fact that he's the only one who can replenish health or numb pain, and most of Jacket's masks being far from useful... well, I think this one kinda speaks for itself.

John Wick wins. Good night.

Greek

DO YOU KNOW WHAT TIME IT IS (i don't have a clock or watch on me seriously what time is it)

Jacket VS Wick, infamous for being super even for most people and... yeah nah there's not much arguing with that honestly. That said, a verdict has to ultimately be chosen sooooooooo...

Let's start physical advantages and how they go. Wick very much undoubtedly has the advantage in terms of proper durability, what with basically every dura feat under his belt far exceeding Jacket's more grounded dura feats, not helped by the fact that a lot of these apply even without taking in the bulletproof suit. That said, Jacket is physically much stronger. Even without masks such as Tony or Don Juan, he has very much shown he is capable of crushing skulls and the like almost effortlessly. Speed however is the most interesting one. Both are very clearly bullet-timers with Jacket having a slight running speed advantage with Brandon's mask. However, reaction speed is another story. Both are generally at an even ground normally, however taking into account how Jacket is superior to the Fans, and they are on bar with Dodgers (who can very casually just dodge automatic fire point blank) I do believe gives him a slight edge. Physically speaking, Jacket is slightly superior. In terms of the power of the weaponry however, Wick's weapons are most definitely superior though, no questions in that case.

The real meat and bones however is most definitely versatility and how it plays into the debate. Wick is generally much more consistent as it primarily comes down to most of it being guns, though a handful of them do operate far more differently than in Jacket's case, whereas Jacket's guns are generally similar. Wick does have the advantage in hand to hand combat, but Jacket makes up for that in having an even bigger advantage in CQC versatility, between the metal pipes, knives and katanas which, while Wick can handle, is still generally a very huge amount to get past.

But then we have the big one: Jacket's masks.

The worst of Jacket's masks are ultimately detrimental which, yeah no shit huge disadvantage, but they are ultimately eclipsed by how ultimately convenient almost every single mask is.

Jacket can get downed with one bullet? Earl and Rufus even the durability gap.
Wick can easily detect Jacket? Louie and Peter proves very much useful.
Running out of ammo? Rami, Aubrey and Charlie solve the issue.

And that's not mentioning the ones that just make him physically superior to Wick like the previously mentioned Don Juan, Tony and Brandon. Jacket swapping out for each one at quick succession is going to prove an insane issue for Wick, especially under the assumption that Jacket can just straight up re-use most of the masks.

Experience wise both are practically on equal ground with Jacket only having the somewhat distinct advantage of having served in Hawaii and being essentially in a completely different league than every other soldier stationed there, alongside his squadron.

Both are equally resourceful, but they can give themselves a major disadvantage with Winston's assistance and Aubrey's mask as both would get a supply of weapons but in turn risking their opponent getting a hold of them too so kinda moot in both's cases.

So with all that in mind, we finally get to the verdict and itself and...

yeah honestly i'm still kinda unsure lol

For the sake of the blog I am gonna try and explain a verdict but rn, I ever so slightly just barely lean... Jacket.

Both are still very much on even grounds when it comes to mostly everything, both make up for something they lack whereas the other doesn't, and ultimately, Wick does take the gun and durability advantage. But ultimately, I think Jacket's masks are still a very unpredictable and very big factor for the debate, as the most useful of Jacket's masks not only even the gaps he could have with Wick, but arguably put them in his favor. Now yes, Wick's bulletproof suit is a massive roadblock and adds to his advantages too. Hell in maybe like 6 months, I could possibly view it as too much of a roadblock for Jacket. But at the time I'm writing this.... well, I don't. The suit is super useful but so long as stopping bullets. Most of the pain would still be there, albeit far lessened, and on top of that, Jacket's precision will prove another issue should he, well, aim for Wick's head, especially when taking into account Jacket being likely faster. CQC is basically even but Wick's superior skill and Jacket's strength and wider weaponry I feel like balance out each other decently enough.

So yeah, likely could change in the future, but for the time being, I just kinda don't see Wick having a proper grip, especially against a thick skinned opponent like the Masked Maniac himself.

notice how hotline miami is an alternate timeline cause they didn't miss the president

Chris

NAME'S JACKET DON'T GET IT MISTAKEN THE SILENCE IS ONLY THE FIRST THING I'LL BE BREAKING OFF THE BAT I'LL OFF john wick AND THEN LICK WHAT'S LEFT OF MY BAT LIKE CAKE MIX

both John Wick and Jacket have way too many fucking weapons for me to properly think about so i'll just use the train of thought of "they both have a lot of guns" and move on

Both of them can dodge gunfire so I'll just say their speed is relative

John has a looooot better protection against guns than Jacket though. Jacket has to be wearing specific masks to do so, which would prevent him from actually using his super useful ones like Tony or Don Juan. And even then, at most Jacket can only tank around 3 bullets before failing completely. In comparison, Wick's suit would keep him in the fight for a looooot longer. If things result in a shootout, Wick is absolutely going to win the war of attrition

In terms of melee combat, things start to lean Wick even more. Jacket simply does not match Wick's general survivability (John has survived several explosions, and the only one Jacket has dealt with.... nearly killed him.), but Wick is by miles the better fighter. The Tony mask and some of the showings of The Fans mean Jacket able to deal massive damage by just punching or even slicing through Wick with a blade, but when it comes to combat as a whole, Wick is just a lot more creative and has more impressive showings of fighting against actual martial arts masters.

No matter which way you slice it, things lean John Wick. He's simply too well-equipped, too skilled, and too much of a proficient, professional killing machine. Jacket is going to wrap that phone around his neck like it's a suicide hotline.

Mannington

I don’t even need to switch to an icon that subliminally brainwashes people to get into my current brainrot, this is the rot.

Anyways, good movies, apex of action and crime thrillers, good games, made me really like killing people, I don’t have anything else to really say beyond these guys are awesome, time to make em kill each other.

Both killers here have shown they’ve got the time and the body count to prove themselves, even their confirmed kills are floating around a similar number, likely with more off screen. John definitely has had more time wrestling in the underbelly of crime, an accomplished hitman for years, and when he thought he was back, did just as good a job kicking ass in his glory days. He’s cleared rooms of hitmen and cities of crime lords in the span of a busy night. Accomplished martial artist and a quick thinker, plenty of accomplished assassins have met their end at his hands with little more care than average mooks.

But even if Wick has more experience in the crime scene, that doesn't mean Jacket is lacking an extensive ref sheet. Even before 50 Blessings, Jacket was pulling off similar stunts in Hawaii with the same level of brutality and skill as his later killings while up against trained military ops. Anyone able to raid an entire police department and kill everyone inside just four years later has to know what they're doing. Even if nobody Jacket has killed is up to snuff with Zero or Calamity, quantity and his bloody overkill easily make up for any significant gap in skill.

But on the topic of big gaps, well…
Jacket, despite all his killing, is way squishier than Wick. Anything worse than a grazed bullet and Jacket is down for the count. His best durability feats leave him unconscious or bleeding out, compared to Wick who’s walked off near point blank explosions and so many beatdowns. He’s also dressed for the occasion, rocking a kevlar suit while Jacket’s namesake lacks any real defense, and can only get up to three saving throws from gunshots through Earl. And if he couldn’t get outclassed even more, John’s automatic weapons and precision will just air out Earl even faster. John also gets plenty of bonus points for going off on his spree with minimal surgery and plenty of wounds with little break across the few weeks the movies take place over. Jacket got shot once and he’s dealing with trauma.

But hey, flipside, doesn't matter if Wick can blow Jacket down with a single shot if he gets his head crushed in by a lead pipe. Comparing direct physical feats is a comical gap just off physical showings. John can snap a guy’s neck in a single blow, with a bit of set up to get them in place. Jacket can instantly rip out a dude’s throat. Nearly everyone Jacket has ever given a knuckle sandwich to has, at best, ended up with their ass flat on the floor, and worst, turned into a Terrorizer reject. With masks like Tony instantly caving in dude’s skulls, it doesn't matter if Jacket isn’t as skilled a martial artist if he can get just a few good licks in. Hell, the kevlar might be good at stopping bullets, but if Jacket can completely bisect people with a machete, he can mess John up with a good swipe, at least bruise him badly with a grand slam.

This is all assuming Jacket can close in on Wick, someone who is far more prepared and absolutely stocked up on bigger guns. Either John lands the shots he needs to get Jacket’s insides on the outside, or Jacket manages to rush in and crush Wick’s windpipe. And to answer all questions of who comes first, we look to who dodges light better. Wick’s fastest speed feat he can scale to, Chidi’s arrow blocking, is four times slower than Jacket’s top possible running speed and, more importantly, fifteen times slower than his throwing speed. Even without the power of confederate’s turning juggling into a lethal artform, Wick is still gonna get hit by a golf club or knife going Mach 2. If he isn’t dead, he’s absolutely dazed, allowing Jacket to close in for an execution or land a clean headshot. And with Jake’s inexplicable power of one hit baseball, Wick isn’t standing again. Even if Jacket is lacking things to chuck at Wick, he’s weaved around tight spots before when he fought The Boss, if the chips are down, he can find an opening to close in.

Accounting for other tertiary advantages helps, spice things up; both Jacket and Wick are smart enough to know how to keep out of harm's way, Wick is probably a teensy bit better put together on account of not having voices in his head, but even compiling these extra details doesn't change who has the clear advantage in strength and speed. Wick might only need one bullet to put him down, but Jacket’s got a pitching arm that outpaces most of his firearms in the first place. No matter how you stack it, Jacket just has more reliable odds when it comes to overpowering Wick.

Wick came in swinging with plenty of experience and tenacity, but Jacket just had all the muscle and tools to make sure the last bits of the Baba Yaga were purified.

wait sorry we got the wrong number-

Pit

Well this was a fun matchup to contemplate, and not just because of all the laughs every one of my friends were getting at my expense dying a thousand times in both Hotline Miami games. I went into this pretty convinced that it would likely be a Jacket sweep. All the different masks he had, the sheer wackiness of Hotline Miami, I was pretty certain cock for a head over there would have this no problem… Anyways, here’s why I think Wick has this now.

Obviously Jacket is far from unable to win this. As far as stats go, he does have a fair share of pretty comfortable advantages, like pure physical strength and running speed. If it came down to pure fisticuffs up close and personal, Jacket would fold John like a failing magazine. Of course, that’s assuming it does devolve into hot fists instead of hot lead. That’s a pretty specific scenario when they’re both most comfortable with whatever weapon you can imagine them getting their hands on.

Jacket’s masks do offer a lot of different approach options that under most circumstances, could be overwhelming to the far more straightforward John… but there’s one, very small thing that throws a slight wrench into that plan.

That goddamn suit.

As it turns out, having a suit that’s completely bulletproof is pretty damn useful against someone that’s primarily coming at you with firearms. Aside from his head, John is completely protected from Jacket gunning him down. In comparison, Jacket has… really nothing covering him designed to nullify damage from a gunshot.

Let’s put it like this- this is where Jacket needs to shoot John to win.

This is where John needs to shoot Jacket to win.

While Jacket has fought a lot of enemies that required certain weapons or strategies to take down, there surprisingly is not a lot of times he’s had to fight someone that required precision just to harm, instead of him just needing to pick up a certain weapon and brute force his way through. Shooting Wick in the head might not seem like he’s being asked to do much, but when he’s so much more of a glass cannon compared to Wick and has to line up a headshot after realising the suit has him protected, while John is shooting at him too, that’s when Jacket starts to have some issues. And no, just grabbing a melee weapon and trying to beat John to death doesn’t help… unless he plans to just chuck his weapon at John, he still has to get close while being shot at from far away.

Jacket’s masks may give him more approach options, but he can’t enjoy all of their benefits at once. Jacket will be compromised in some way. So let’s go down the list and look at how they’d change the fight.

Richard: Doesn’t offer any special perks, so old dickhead doesn’t really help at all.

Rasmus: Could eliminate stealth from the equation for John. Won’t eliminate the bullet from Jacket’s skull.

Tony: Basically an instant win for Jacket if he gets in close. Shame it doesn’t help him to actually get close through all the bullets.

Aubrey: If anything, this benefits Wick more than Jacket since he’ll be getting way more mileage from those guns since he’s not trying to shoot someone that’s bulletproof.

Don Juan: I’d be more confused than anything if Jacket was trying to win by using a door.

Graham: One of the more useful masks due to the movement speed upgrade. Still doesn’t do much to help him actually survive getting shot.

Dennis: Jacket brings a knife to a gunfight. Next.

George: Jacket gets a better view of his lungs getting spread across the walls like butter getting spread on toast.

Ted: The dogs may not hurt Jacket, but the dog lover will.

Rufus: This gives Jacket more defense against bullets, which sounds really good, and in a select few scenarios it could give him the win… but it doesn’t make the bullets bounce off him. It just makes him, at best, take three times the bullets to kill, so it’s not like Jacket becomes bulletproof. And John…

doesn’t have too much of a problem unloading a whole clip into one guy.

Rami: More bullets to bounce off the suit.

Willem: He can steal John’s weapon if he kills him… if he kills him.

PeterCould be useful if Jacket tries to be stealthy but doesn’t help his survivability at all.

Zack: Zack

Oscar: Now Jacket can die looking like an MS-DOS game.

Rick: Instant kills if the bullets connect with soft, fleshy bits, and John’s suit is neither soft nor fleshy.

Brandon: Basically the same as Graham.

Charlie: Nice melee weapons. Here’s a bullet to the jaw.

Leon: Pretty useful in helping Jacket get the jump on John and one of his more genuine win-cons. If John also goes for stealth though, it becomes pretty redundant, and something tells me John isn’t stupid enough to just advertise himself in the open if he doesn’t know where his target went.

Phil: Gives Jacket a while flag to wave while surrendering.

Nigel: .esrever ni eid nac tekcaJ woN

Earl: Same story as Rufus.

Jones: The janitor will be extra pissed mopping up the added intestines from Jacket’s corpse.

Carl: Shapeshifts his arm to a big drill, but he’s not harming ya.

Jake: Could be useful to snipe Jacket with something less impeded by the bulletproof suit, like… idk, a katana. Bullets are still faster than a thrown object though so whomp whomp.

Richter: Starts with a gun… I feel like you get the issue by now.

Russell: Now Jacket can die looking like he walked off the set of Wandavision.

Is the bulletproof suit foolproof? Obviously not. Like I said, if Jacket does get in close, John is pretty cooked. Jacket could just completely overpower him in that scenario, and even in a gunfight, the masks that give him greater longevity against John’s bullets could be enough to line up a shot to the head, which would knock John flat on his ass since he doesn’t have anything to defend against that. Still, let this serve as a reminder of just how much of a difference having actual protection can make in a fight when you’re fighting someone that unlike you, is going to go down no matter where you shoot them. Talk about a wicked way to go out. My vote goes to John Wick.

Rated

Hi there! RatedM here, and lemme just say how much I fuckin ADORE this matchup, the thematics and potential for both a fight and a soundtrack make it incredibly tempting to wanna commission, but enough talk, what you’re here to see is my opinion on who would take the win, the Baba Yaga or the Mask Maniac. Well, after some very thorough investigation, in my opinion, I believe Jacket would be taking the win overall.

Let’s get stats out of the way, starting with Strength. This category is one I believe should go to Jacket. Jacket is able to gore people with a single strike of a machete, and split them in half. He’s capable of ripping out throats with his bare hands, and completely shattering a human skull by stomping on it. Wick on the other hand, while he's not ripping off heads or ripping out throats, he's still certainly capable of slamming people through bulletproof windows and throwing people around. However, with the Tony mask, Jacket's strength increases drastically, turning his punches fatal to any person he decides to smack around, even Mafia thugs, who need to take a massive amount of bullets before they can even be put down.

Now let’s talk Speed. While Wick hasn't shown anything too crazy in terms of speed, he should scale to Chidi, who blocked an arrow right before it hit him, Jacket has the means to increase his own speed, and his own UPSCALING should be way too much for him to run circles around the Baba Yaga. With the Graham mask, his speed increases by a good margin, but the Brandon mask turns him into a bloody blur for anyone that sees him (though it IS difficult to calculate an exact number for him). Not to mention, Jacket should absolutely upscale/scale to characters like Beard, Richter, The Fans and the Mafia, who have fought against a very "special" type of enemy known as a Dodger, members of the Russian mafia and Colombian cartels who WILL dodge any ranged attack thrown at them, until they're killed with a melee weapon. These weapons can range from a nail gun to an Uzi, to an M16. Regardless if you're at point blank range or not, Dodgers will duck under as the shots are fired, thus making me firmly believe that Jacket will be running circles around Wick, or at the very least, get the drop on him before anything and giving him the opportunity to swap masks.

Now let's talk Durability. Starting with Jacket, outside of the Rufus & Earl masks, Jacket in gameplay is known to be a glass cannon, instantly dying whenever he's hit with literally any attack thrown his way. The highest feat we've seen for his durability is when he tanked an elevator explosion that put him in critical condition, and while some may argue that since he was about to bleed out and it shouldn't count towards his durability at all, I think it's still a good showing of the absolute HIGHEST amount of punishment he CAN take.  Being an assassin, John Wick has survived it all; explosions, mutilation, gunshots, and being stabbed. He's survived falling off of balconies and rooftops, making him incredibly tough to put down, even more so when you take his bulletproof suit into account. While it seems like they MAY be evenly matched in taking hits, I think this point should go to Wick regardless, seeing as how he's had more experience in taking a LOT more punishment, and while Jacket taking the elevator explosion is impressive, outside of the Rufus & Earl masks, he's not as experienced in taking the hurt he likes to put on people.

But physicals aren't the only thing that make this match! There are some secondary factors we need to delve into before we can TRULY reach a verdict. In terms of resourcefulness and arsenal, I'd argue they're evenly matched, being able to turn practically anything into a weapon, and are extremely proficient in firearms, though I will say that Jacket's versatility with his masks does make me side with him a little more.

Experience is also a pretty decently big factor here, Jacket is a former Veteran, and part of the Ghost Wolves unit in the military, an elite group of 4 soldiers who'd be sent on the most dangerous missions, from capturing bases to an entire nuclear power plant, and singlehandedly win each battle. Wick on the other hand, aside from possibly serving as a Marine, has been with the Tarasov Crime Family for several years, being sent out to prove that the "impossible" tasks he was dealt, were in fact possible.

I'd say overall, experience should be about even for both.

In terms of skill, I think it's fair to say Wick blows Jacket out of the water in hand to hand. With Jacket, he has only ONE thing on his mind: vengeance. Jacket won't waste any time with blocking or getting a clean fight, no, he'll cave your skull in and crush your head when you either least expect it, or when he's let the rage within him take over. This has led to him becoming pretty sloppy in terms of a direct fight, relying on his strength, speed and discretion above all else. Wick on the other hand, is a martial arts MENACE, taking on enemies with several moves from sambo, aikido, and judo to beat the ever living hell out of them. While Jacket isn't exactly UNSKILLED, it'd be pretty disingenuous to say he'd be able to match Wick hand-to-hand, making this a very easy point for Wick.

With all of that out of the way, to summarize and to answer: Where do I stand in the verdict?

Well, after giving it much thought, I believe Jacket should be the last one standing in this bloody battle. In terms of physicals, The Mask Maniac not only overpowers the Baba Yaga, he can blitz him before the latter can do anything to stop him. While John may be tougher and is more experienced in taking hits, Jacket's combo of strength and speed make it to where durability is a bit of a moot point, made all the worse for Wick when Jacket puts on the Tony or Brandon masks, making his strength and speed increase drastically. The bulletproof suit may be useful, especially when engaging in a gunfight with Jacket, but the truth is, Jacket is most definitely going to want to go in for a melee kill, preferring to beat Wick to a bloody pulp before anything else. In terms of versatility and arsenal, I'd say Jacket just barely takes this one. Wick has a lot on him sure, but they're really not all that different from the things Jacket has seen in his days as a soldier and as a 50 Blessings operative, while his Mask perks offer him ways to raise up his strength, speed, and defense, while ALSO allowing him to silence his weapons (Peter Mask), making it to where Wick won't be able to keep track of him. In experience, I think both should have AROUND the same amount, being sent to perform impossible missions and singlehandedly performing each one with flying colors (red to be exact). Though in terms of skill, Wick easily takes the point, hand-to-hand specifically. While Jacket prefers to just punch and gore, Wick is able to use his knowledge of martial arts to possibly outwit Jacket should they come to trade blows.

All in all, it's an EXTREMELY close matchup and an interesting fight, but I think that with his notable stat advantage and sheer versatility, Jacket will be the one to live to continue hurting people another day. At least, that is until the nu-

Aussie

So, Wick vs Jacket, really cool matchup, but god this is gonna be hard to come up with a verdict for. Let's break it down.

Firstly, let's break down strength, and *oh boy*, it's dead-even. Both are the peak of human strength, being able to knock down and kill people in just a few hits, but that's the thing, *both* are at that peak level of strength. While both have the firepower to almost make that strength irrelevant, they both also wear their protection on their sleeves, with Wick's suit and the Rufus and Earl masks making those pesky bullets be minor scratches. Reasonably, I should say that this section is a tie, but I'm going to give it to Wick, because with their even strength, his suit is far more convenient than Jacket's masks.

Now, speed, which should be the easiest section to figure out. Both have dodged bullets, but Jacket is able to do so more reliably. On top of that, he's far faster on foot then Wick could ever get, so for speed, I'm giving it to Jacket.

Finally, the misc. section, which isn't going to be all that long compared to previous blogs because of how human they are. While both are basically dead even in a lot of ways, there's two things that Wick has that'll give him that slight edge; natural adrenaline and artificial painkillers. Jacket may be just as strong, but Wick's stamina is superhuman, taking just as much punishment as his foe in a much shorter timespan.

So overall, it's close, but I'm giving the edge to Wick, because with stats as close as these, any notable advantage is good. Even with Jacket's greater speed, their even experience and skill helps to close the gap on that. Guess that Jacket got dogged on.

Yes that is the best I could do, shut up

Gman

It's been a while since the last one of these, and I'm looking at two more gunmen!

As usual I'm gonna cover stats then arsenal.

First off, strength. While both Wick and Jacket are, fucking phenomenal at killing people with their bare hands, Jacket's showings of murder and dismemberment are just...wow. Snapping necks with one hand, ripping throats out, crushing heads, crushing heads with a kick, ripping jaws off, and this is without masks like Tony and Don Juan, who can further amp his strength to killing people with a punch and by opening doors respectively! Wick, while being able to destroy bulletproof glass, as well as stagger a 600 lbs man is impressive, hasn't shown the same sheer butchery his opponent has, thus giving Jacket the advantage in strength.

Now for speed. Wick and Jacket are both bullet timers, (sometimes when Hotline Miami feels like it for the latter). Which like, impressive sure. But more impressive is Wick fighting Chidi, who was able to block an arrow fired from a recurve bow at him, which got to subsonic speed! And even more impressive than that is Jacket's throwing and running speed, which get to 720 m/s (which is faster than subsonic thank you for linking the vsbw things Loka) and 184 m/s. The latter can be further buffed by the Brandon mask, becoming 222 m/s! Jacket takes speed.

As for Durability...yeah John Wick takes this. Surviving a powerplant explosion that obliterated someone's body is impressive but compared to
  • Tanking a car crash explosion
  • Being sent flying into a steel beam
  • Getting run over like every fifteen minutes
  • Surviving a grenade launcher explosion that sent him flying and blew up his house
  • Getting slammed through bulletproof glass
  • Getting shot point blank and falling three stories while hitting things on his way
All of which happened in the span of a few weeks with little to no treatment and baseline surgery. Also he's got a bulletproof suit which leaves everything but his head protected

And now...

The arsenal section

These guys, have so many firearms, blades, explosives, throwing stuff it's crazy, oh my god 😭. But outside of that, Wick has
  • The aforementioned bulletproof suit
  • A belt that can defend against knives and act like a whip
  • Painkillers, which taking only two of can keep him functioning perfectly
  • A pencil, which he KILLED THREE PEOPLE WITH, HOW DOES HE-
  • Zaschita, a somewhat bulletproof mask intended to protect Wick's identity. Most likely able to make up for the bulletproof suit's biggest weakness.
Now for Jacket's arsenal. Like with Wick, since they've got lots of guns and stuff of that ilk, I'll be talking about any real standouts.
  • Tony mask, which amplifies Jacket's strength to absurd degrees, as mentioned earlier he can kill people with a single punch, as well as letting that strength transfer to ranged weapons.
  • Aubrey Mask, which causes gums to appear all over the map. This would help a lot if Jacket wasn't fighting John fucking Wick
  • Don Juan mask, which lets Jacket open doors hard enough to kill people behind them
  • Graham mask, which boosts Jacket's speed up to 25%
  • Rufus mask, which lets Jacket take up to 1 to 3 gunshots before dying
  • Rami mask, which adds more ammo, specifically 1/3 more, to his firearms
  • Brandon mask, which is the aforementioned Graham mask but better, combat wise and looking!
  • Earl mask, Rufus but better
  • Jake mask, which increases Jacket's throwing arm, to the point where anything thrown would be near fatal. Given how strong Jacket already is, and how fast he can throw things, this is very useful.
Frankly with the amount of weaponry both have, I was tempted to call this a tie. But, I believe with the help of the stat amping masks, arsenal goes to Jacket

I'm also gonna do some tertiary advantages

Uhh, John Wick is way better at hand to hand, is able to heal from wounds and stuff, canonically has a higher body count than Jacket, and is fighting a dog murderer. Those would help 👍

So, who do I think wins?

While this would certainly be both characters toughest battle ever, no doubt about that, I believe that in spite of John Wick's durability and skill, Jacket, with his superior strength, speed, as well as masks that can amplify said strength and speed, however minor those amps may be, has what he'll need to kill the guy you send to kill the fucking Boogeyman.

...Yeah I'm sorry guys I can't think of a pun this time 🤷‍♂️

Mr.Man

Hey there, Mr.Man here. I’m not usually on these blogs but it seemed that things were super tied up and that a tiebreaker was needed, so hey yeah I’m that guy. Matchup is pretty cool btw Hotline Miami’s an incredible duology and the Wick movies are great.

You’ve probably gotten the gist of most of the stats by this point in the blog, Jacket is the physically stronger of the two due to being able to completely gore people with his weapons and shattering skulls, while Wick is a lot tougher due to just taking all kinds of punishment any way more frequently than Jacket has taken himself. Speed is a little arguable due to the fact that Jacket hasn’t fought the bullet dodging “dodgers” himself, but I see very little reason as to why Jacket would not be at the very least comparable to not only the dodgers themselves, but also the characters who can kill them. Plus Wick is a lot less reliable of a bullet dodger in comparison.

Though really stats alone are hardly enough to decide a winner here, and the secondary advantages seem to make things even more complex. Jacket is obviously a lot stronger physically, but wouldn’t Wick’s better hand to hand experience make him not as dangerous up close? Wick can take a lot more punishment and is generally more durable, but couldn’t Jacket use some of his masks to widen the gap in stats even more, somewhat rendering this moot? And you can keep going back and forth with other advantages as such, so it’s a little hard to say.

So if both of them have a lot of equally strong advantages, who wins? Well it’s very close but…

…I think there’s a bit of a stronger case to be made for Jacket personally. Wick’s still got a very good amount of advantages, and the bulletproof suit is almost enough for me to side with him, but I don’t think it’s enough. Both of these two are incredibly accurate and well trained soldiers, if either of them get an opportunity for a kill shot in this fight they’re absolutely landing that shot, and while Wick’s bulletproof vest means that Jacket will have to be more precise, I don’t think that’s enough of a disadvantage on Jacket’s end, it just means he needs to be more precise with his aim. With the speed advantage he’d be quick enough to dodge any shots Wick sends his way so even though his entire body is more exposed than Wick, it’s somewhat (though not completely) mitigated by his speed advantage.

Conversely, Wick has very little answers to the fact that Jacket will always be that much stronger and faster than him. Wick can take a lot of punishment for sure, and his superior hand to hand skills means that he’s not completely finished if the fight comes to close range, but he’s still going to be weaker by a good amount and he has no real way to stop or mitigate that. This problem is made even worse with some of Jacket’s masks, which make him even stronger and faster.

There are a couple more miscellaneous categories you can cover such as experience and stealth, which the two are relatively even in, but at the end of the day they don’t do too much to change the verdict in my eyes. But I want to go into detail for a few potential counter arguments/good arguments I’ve seen for Wick.

“Isn’t Jacket a glass cannon? All Wick would need to do is tag him once to put him down.”

This is probably the strongest argument you can make for Wick, and I do think it has a lot of merit. Jacket is nowhere near as durable as Wick is, in fact, he’s quite squishy with having no armor at all.

But Jacket having the speed advantage makes me hesitant to rely on this for a winning argument. Hotline Miami’s bullet dodging is a lot more blatant whereas Wick’s instances of it are a lot less reliable, and the next best feat Wick can scale to by comparison is arrow catching, which is a lot slower. With this drastic speed difference, I think it’s a little less likely for Wick to land a kill shot, though not impossible as Wick is an expert marksman.

“Wouldn’t Wick’s better martial arts skills stop Jacket from killing him up close?”

It's possible. Jacket is absolutely less skilled in hand to hand compared to Wick, no question. Wick has mastered way more fighting styles whereas Jacket is a lot less refined and more so relies on his own strength than skill. If the fight came down to hand to hand Wick would definitely take it.

Though I don't see Jacket relying on his hand to hand skills for an up close fight, he's likely going to use some sort of a melee weapon like a bat or a metal pipe. Wick could attempt to disarm him, but with Jacket being so much stronger and faster he's taking a pretty massive gamble.

“Is Jacket scaling to the dodgers reliable?”

Easy enough to explain, but there’s potentially an issue with scaling Jacket to the dodgers since Jacket has never fought them himself, but there’s a pretty easy way to scale him to them.

The Fans have fought and killed dodgers, and the Fans also partook in the Soviet-American war, which Jacket was also a part of. Hell, Jacket’s own group he fought with during the war was alluded to being superior to the Fans’ group. Even without this, characters in Hotline Miami are usually depicted as being around the same in terms of strength/speed/durability, so I think Jacket scaling to these other feats is fine.

I could go into more detail with other factors, but other verdicts in this blog likely have done that already. Ultimately, I think this fight is Jacket’s to win, he’s stronger, faster, and has a ton of masks to either widen the stat gap further, or give him his own unique special perks to one up Wick. It’s far from a stomp, it's absurdly close in fact, and I imagine there have been plenty of verdicts that have made pretty good cases for Wick, but I think Jacket has the power, speed and tools needed to clutch the win in the end.

  1. ain’t no way, bro really just assumed “speed is relative” and gave Wick the win off of that
