Prediction Blog: Wolverine vs Raiden
"Everyone says, 'Well, you should be harmless, virtuous, you shouldn’t do anyone any harm, you should sheath your competitive instinct. You shouldn’t try to win. You don’t want to be too aggressive. You don’t want to be too assertive.' No. Wrong. You should be a monster, an absolute monster, and you should learn how to control it." - Jordan Peterson
Wolverine, the X-Men's fearsome Weapon X.
Raiden, Metal Gear's deadly cyborg Ripper.
The hunger for bloodshed, the struggle to contain the beast within. When your life has been subject to tragedy and loss beyond words or description, it's no suprise that you end up with difficulty to adapt to anything beyond the cadavre-filled battlefield.
But although they began their lives at the very bottom, they still continued to push for their ideals, to fight the good fight even when they had to take it head on against the entire world. In this reexamined crossing of blades, will the cyborg ninja once more claim victory over Marvel's formidable anti-hero? Let's find out!
Before we begin...
This blog will analyse these two characters solely from their mainline universes, being Marvel's Earth-616 and the mainline Metal Gear timeliness respectively (This includes Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, obviously).
In terms of equipment, they will both be given every weapon they can feasibly have access to at their homebase of operations and carry into battle. Not much else to say, so let's cut on in!

Background
Wolverine
It was an October night in Cold Lake, Canada, year 1882, that a mutant boy was born. Named James Howlett, he was created from an affair his mother Elizabeth had with her husbands groundskeeper Thomas. James' life was rough, as he had to grow up only by his non-biological father's side after his mother was institutionalised, who regularly abused him under the pretense that it's what he needed to become stronger.
Over time, one thing lead to another, and Thomas became desperate to claim Elizabeth as his own, storming into the Howlett household armed with a shotgun. But as he shot James' father dead in front of him, something weird happened with James, and a pair of three long and sharp bone claws extended out of his wrists. With the first manifestation of his mutant abilities, James violently stabbed Thomas to death in a berserker rampage, leading Elizabeth to such distress that she took her own life with the very same shotgun that killed her husband.
With his entire family dead in one night, James fled the state alongside his childhood friend Rose, taking the name "Logan" to hide his identity. But little did Logan know that the tragedies of his life had just begun, a realisation that started setting in when he accidentally stabbed Rose to death as well, leaving him truly alone in the world.
The following decades, Logan would do whatever he could to get by, with his mutant regeneration slowing down his age, such as serving in both the Vietnam and Civil Wars. It was soon after, that for whatever reason, Doctor Abraham Cornelius took a particular interest in Logan, and had him kidnapped to be taken into the Weapon X Program. There, he was manipulated, brainwashed, and experimented on in order to create the next newest super soldier. As part of this, his bones were forcefully injected with and coated in Adamantium, one of the strongest metals on the planet.
But Cornelius had no idea what man he was trying to control. Although their tests had proven positive yields at first, it didn't take long for Logan to fall into another state of animalistic rage, breaking out of his confinement, slaughtering everyone in view, and fleeing into the woods. With his memories and personality lost, Logan began turning feral, truly becoming a savage beast.
After a brief scuffle with the Hulk, Logan was approached by Charles Xavier with an offer that he couldn't refuse. Given the moniker "Wolverine", Logan joined the X-Men for the fight towards equality between humans and mutants worldwide. But it wasn't the only thing Xavier offered. Although he had been sceptical towards the promises of hope at first, Logan soon began to respect his ideals and determination, and even started to from genuine relationships with his fellow X-Men.
It had been a long time coming, but Logan had finally found the family that he belonged in, people willing to help him in his quest for his lost memories and growth as a person. But that just means he now has more to lose than ever, so anyone who dares to challenge the X-Men or put the lives of the innocents at dangers risk should watch out, because few can match the sheer tenacity and deadlyness of the Weapon X.
Raiden
On a rainy day in Liberia, a boy was born. He was known simply as "Jack", and it wasn't long after his birth that his parents were tragically killed, leading to his adoption by one Solidus Snake. Solidus raised Jack as a child soldier in the First Libyan Civil War. And he became good. Really good.
Under Solidus' tutoring, Jack became a killing machine so fierce that he earned names such as his now iconic "Jack the Ripper". At just six years old, he had more kills under his belt than the rest of his peers combined, even becoming a field Capatian in the Army of the Devil.
And then, the war ended. Jack was abandoned by Solidus and left alone with his thoughts of self-deprecation and hatred for his past actions. Even after meeting the love of his life, Jack wanted to atone for his sins by doing something right, and thus joined special task force FOXHOUND, where he was given the codename "Raiden".
After being given a nanomachine injection in his spinal cortex and a change out of his blood to a nanite-filled substance, Raiden teamed up with the legendary Solid Snake for the Manhattan Incident, where he came face to face with Solidus once more. Turns out, not only was Solidus kind of a dick who wanted to kill Jack and use his nanomachines to go down in history as the next George Washington... but he was also the one who killed Jack's parents.
Once Solidus was dead, Raiden wasn't too sure what his purpose in life would be. After believing that he lost his child to miscarriage (not actually a miscarriage), Raiden's trauma and memories of his awful past began bubbling up again, and he left to wander the Earth alone. What actually ended up happening was his capture by the Patriots, who used him as a test subject for exoskeleton enhancement surgery, transforming him into a cyborg. He was eventually able to escape, but recognised that he would now never live a normal life again.
Instead, Raiden joined Maverick, a private military company trying to aid a country ruined by a civil war. Understandably, Raiden felt very personal about the cause, which was only furthered when he came into conflict with "Jetstream" Samuel Rodrigues, a mercenary for the Desperado LLC terrorist group, which ended with his arm severed and continued civil war unprevented.
Desperado wanted to keep the war going for their believed betterment of humanity, so Raiden and Maverick continued the fight against them, which was when he learned about their usage of child soldiers and the plan to harvest their organs to create killer cyborgs. Raiden took the fight directly to their funder, Senator Steven Armstrong, and thanks to a single act of generosity from Sam before his death, Jack managed to take the win using Sam's Muramasa blade.
With Armstrong crushed and the world viewing him as a killer, Raiden would continue forwards. He left Maverick to become independent, finally fighting a war personal to him, finally fighting by his own choice. Where will this new ideology take his path forwards? Perhaps, he doesn't even know himself.
Equipment
Wolverine
Adamantium-Laced Skeleton
One of the most notable things about Wolverine is his old skeleton chrome job. You probably already know it, but Logan's skeleton is covered bones to teeth in adamantium, one of the most durable metals known to man, capable of withstanding the might of both Hulk and Thor, and self-regenerative, albeit to which extent is unknown. Hell, even Silver Samurai's tachyon blade and adamantium itself can't get though Logan's skeleton.
Now, adamantium isn't perfect, and has its fair share of weaknesses. For starters, it's magnetic, meaning that it can be affected by electromagnetic forces and controlled by those who can manipulate it (Magneto). Specialised magic and reality warping are also capable of bypassing it's physical defences. And finally, adamantium is only as durable as it is due to its sheer chemical bonding strength which lies at the atomic level, so bypassing that would also bypass its durability.
Bone Claws
That's where he got the name from. Housed within his wrists, Wolverine possesses six retractable bone claws (three on each arm) that he can extend out whenever he wants with that oh so satisfying classic sound. Naturally, these are coated in adamantium, boosting their already impressive cutting power far beyond most weapons in Marvel.
Thanks to these claws of his, Wolverine is extremely deadly up close, capable of slicing and dicing through almost anything, even the bodies of powerful characters like Hulk and Thanos... but not always.
Superhero Suit
Logan's tight spandex superhero costume is a pretty standard ass-kicking suit all things considered. What matters is that it looks cool, after all. Unfortunately, it doesn't provide much protection, which is why he sometimes instead wears...
Ablation Armour
...the Ablation Armour! Originally, Logan donned this fancy new fit after he lost his powers of regeneration, but he's also stated that he keeps several spares for the added protection they could provide. Made by Spider-Man (actually Doc Ock in Spider-Man's body), it's supposedly strong enough to withstand a nuke.
Adamantium Armour
Yeah so this became a thing a bit ago.
Specifically commissioned by Logan in preparations for a possible "doomsday scenario", the adamantium armour was built by Forge and is... well, an entire suit made completely of adamantium. This means that is has all the boons that his skeleton provides, but instead covering his entire body, so thanks for that Logan's paranoia.
Anyways so Sabretooth shot him with a power-nullifying dart because he's a hater, and now Logan has been wearing this thing for the past three issues while beating the shit out of him. He also revealed that the armour actually gave him his powers back because it can do that ig so we now have a Wolverine operating at full capacity inside of a suit of armour that the Hulk probably couldn't get through.
probably won't last.
Muramasa
Yes, Muramasa, not Murasama
It may seem overkill for the Wolverine, a guy who already has six blades bolted to his body, to pick up a sword, but this Muramasa thing is the real deal. Forged using a piece of Logan's soul (yes), the sword is almost unbreakable, capable of deflecting Cyclops' lasers, and able to cut almost anything down to the molecular level. It also has the special properties to nullify healing factors, which Logan has even stated would be enough to actually kill him. Right now he's even using it alongside the adamantium armour because I guess he just decided to lock the fuck in.
Hell, you know you've got a cool sword when even Vergil wants it.
Firearms
While they're far from his preferred type of weapons, Logan has in the past utilised several firearms for combative purposes, such as machine guns, pistols, and even miniguns. He appears to be pretty damn good with them too, all things considered. Makes sense, he's a trained soldier.
Motorcycle
Wolverine's primary way of getting from place to place. Over his life, he's used a large number of different motorcycles, which tells me that he's either got a huge collection, or just keeps breaking them. It's probably the latter.
Blackbird
Although he's unlikely to bust it out, being a high ranking X-Men member (X-Man?) means that Logan has access to their primary vehicle; the RS-150 Blackbird. With sleek dark colours, a 62 foot wingspan, and a tendency to get blown up, the Blackbird is the ideal flying machine for your team of supes, capable of flying at over twice the speed of sound, and coming armed with miniature missiles and laser weapons, topped of with a smart cloaking device.
Raiden
Skull Suit
Raiden's main protective gear pre-cyborization, the skull class body suit offers not just a sleek appearance, but also grade a protection and stealth capabilities. Made out of a synthetic material, it automatically repairs itself when damaged.
Following his cyborization, Raiden seems to have stopped using it.
Cyborg Body
Speaking of the white devil, Raiden has worn quite a few cyborg bodies during his life, but his best and most recent was provided by Maverick SI, designed and built by Doktor. Thanks to now being more machine than human, Raiden is hardly affected by losing limbs or getting stabbed like, all the god-damn time. Other, less power cyborgs are capable of surviving for several minutes, and are equipped with an emergency supply of oxygen that could put them in a state of hibernation if severely damaged.
Character on his level like the Wind of Destruction members were even able to remain conscious and communicate with him after being sliced to miniscule pieces. Needless to say, you'll have a real hard time putting him down.
High-Frequency Blades
Raiden is most at home with a blade in his hands, and the type that he carries with him the most often is the specialised HF (High-Frequency) Swords, usually in the form of a katana or odachi.
What makes these blades unique is the very thing they're named after, that being their ability to vibrate at extremely high frequencies, to the point where they destabilise the molecular bonds of their targets, allowing for drastically improved cutting power without the need for effort from the wielder.
Oh but it gets better, according to Maverick SI's very own Kevin Washington, HF Blades are even capable of affecting the electron-shells of atoms, allowing it to slice through targets on a quantum-level. More specifically, it's able to cause quantum-decoherence at the planck scale, completely severing the bonds between individual atoms. For reference, in real life, one Planck length is the smallest possible thing ANYTHING can be, equivalent to around a millionth of a billionth of a billionth of a billionth of a cm (or, .00000000000000000000000000000000001). This is infinitesimal enough to be at the very edge of calculability itself.
Raiden can cut it.
Anyhow, aside from the standard blade that Raiden used for most of his life post-Solidus, he also carries a few alternatives, such as:
- HF Longsword: Is a long sword! 10% slower, but makes up for it in range and power, being even stronger than the Murasama.
- HF Machete: Basically the opposite of the above, being a much shorter and weaker sword, but making up for it in speed.
- HF Stun Blade: With the same general stats as the machete, the HF Stun Blade isn't much to write home about 80% of the time. What about the other 20%, you ask? Well, it's in the name. You can probably figure it out.
- HF Armourbreaker: Fashioned after an old classic tale of kabutowari sword, known for its ability to split an armoured helmet in one strike. Befitting this legend, the armour breaker has a 20% chance to... break armour, leaving Raiden's opponents in a vulnerable state.
- HF Fox Blade: The same sword that used to at one point belong to the og cyborg ninja, Gray Fox. This beast of a blade is capable of completely ignoring its targets defences, slicing with potent deadliness in every swing. It's even capable of chopping clean through a truck-sized Grad with one attack.
- HF Wooden Sword: A blunt weapon incapable of cutting. Good for getting your aggression out.
- Hebidamashii: A... debatably canonical sword exclusive to the Japanese release of MG Rising, this sword... contains the soul of Solid Snake and will let out random Snake quips when swung- what the fuck???
Murasama
Yes, Murasama, not Muramasa
While Raiden has many different swords to discuss, there's no doubt about it that his best one is the one and only, red beauty known as the Murasama, given to him by his rival Sam.
Originally forged in the 16th century, the blade was passed down through Sam's family, where it was outfitted with extremely powerful HF technology and a pressure switch on the sheath that can fire the sword out like a projectile or grant unparalleled cutting power. Following their climactic final duel, Sam asked Blade Wolf to do whatever he wished with the sword, which ended up with him gifting it to Raiden during his battle with Senator Armstrong. Thanks to it, Raiden was able to win the day, and since then presumably uses the Murasama as his main weapon.
L'Etranger
Raiden has an odd habit of stealing the weapons from his deceased enemies. This was the first sub-weapon he acquired, that being from the Cold Wind of France, Mistral.
The L'Etranger is an interesting weapon, a combination of a pole-arm, a spear, and a whip, which it can swap between at a moments need due to being composed out of individual mini GEKKO arms. There are blades on each end which are outfitted with HF technology.
Dystopia
The weapon used by the Wind of Southeast Asia, Monsoon, Dystopia is an electromagnetic sai that Raiden can use to grapple around and latch onto targets. Thanks to its EM capabilities, it'll also momentarily stun any vulnerable target it gets into contact with, though more powerful opponents will get rid of the effect quickly.
Bloodlust
Originally belonging to the Californian Wildfire, Sundowner (remember him?), Bloodlust is FUCKING AWESOME. A massive set of HF executioner type swords that can be mounted into a bracket to serve as a pair of shears, Bloodlust is powerful enough to decimate any target it strikes, a fully charged attack capable of skipping entire phases of boss fights. Unfortunately, they aren't the quickest weapon, and requires a long charge for deadlier attacks.
Throwing Knife
That's literally the only time he uses it in the entire game. It's a knife that he can throw at things, but don't expect him to pull it out anytime soon. Doesn't really matter. Knife. I'm tired.
Firearms
He rarely uses them nowadays, but Raiden hasn't completely forgone his large number of firearms, and is capable of calling them in whenever needed. He's good with just about any gun, from pistols and shotguns, to sniper rifles.
Rocket & Missile Launchers
For weapons that he usually does keep on hand, Raiden frequently uses rocket / missile launchers, the latter capable of homing in on targets.
Grenades
They go boom. Raiden has access to a number of different kabooms, such as the normal explosive variants, remotely-detonated C4, and smoke bombs. More special are the EM grenade, which sends out an electromagnetic pulse that'll immediately knock out any targets vulnerable to it, and the Chaff grenade, which will completely jam any radio equipment and electronic devices (Raiden's own not included).
Solid Eye
An attachable eyepiece that Raiden can use to enhance his vision. With it, he can see in darkness with no issue, zoom in over 40 times over, track footprints on the ground, see through objects and pinpoint their weak spots, and even analyse other people's body temperature and heart rates. His best version is in the form of a mask that can open and close around his face at any moment for quick access.
Furthermore, Raiden can use the Solid Eye to call up a visual of whoever he is contacting with his Codec (see below). He can even bring up dozens of separate hologram screens at once if he needs a lot of information at the same time.
Codec
At any moment, Raiden is able to phone one of his many allies via the Codec system, and thanks to it being built and based on through his nanomachines, the following calls will be completely silent to anyone trying to listen in.
These calls can provide him with useful intel, aid in figuring out his next plan of attack, discover enemy weakness, and so on and so forth. Naturally, the exact help he'll get depends on who he calls, so we'll put a pin in this for now until we get to the Support section.
Soliton Radar
Essentially a HUD mini-map that Raiden can project and follow, the Soliton Radar has two primary uses. For starters, his allies will continously automatically update it with his next mission status, giving him an easier way of knowing where to go. More majorly however is it's proper Soliton functions, using EM wavelengths to visualise an AR version of his surroundings, Raiden can scan an area around him. By doing this, he can discover anything from enemy hiding spots, to hidden weapons and items, and ghosts. Fun!
Electrolytes
Electrolytes is the magic liquid that makes many cyborgs function, and Raiden loves extracting it from them in order to refill his fuel cell energy gauge, which is what allows him to activate Blade and Ripper Mode. Raiden can of course get these from enemy cyborgs, who will refill his gauge with every attack (how nice), but for more on the spot needs, he carries up to five electrolytes packs as well.
Nanopaste
Should Raiden ever need on the spot healing, he carries these packets of repair nanopaste to do just that! He may only be able to carry five at a time, but even one will be more than enough to get him back to full working capability in no time.
Infinite Wigs
While they just seem like secret and non-canon collectibles, Snake specifically has mentioned his Infinite Bandana in a canon cutscene, meaning that the technology for infinite ammunition weapons does canonically exist in Metal Gear. Thus, there's is no reason these should not be counted as well.
- Infinite Wig A: Grants infinite ammo for all sub-weapons, meaning rocket & missile launchers as well as all types of grenades. Likely extends to normal firearms as well.
- Infinite Wig B: Grants infinite fuel cell energy, allowing Raiden to remain in Blade Mode and more usefully Ripper Mode indefinitely.
- Blade Mode Wig: Allows Raiden to dismember any targets with even casual sword swings, as if he was constantly in Blade Mode. Does not extend to bosses.
Motorcycle
It seems that the Murasama wasn't the only thing Raiden stole from Sam...
Cardboard Box
The number one weapon for any self-respecting sneaky boi, the ultimate stealth tool that is basically guaranteed to change your life should you use it. No foe, no security system, no ANYTHING can detect you while you're inside of this multipurpose defence, it's the PERFECT FOOLPROOF PLAN!
it is a box made out of cardboard
Powers and Abilities
Wolverine
Martial Arts
It's easy to forget, but Wolverine is actually one of the most martially skilled heroes in all of Marvel, capable of contending with the likes of Iron Fist and Moon Knight. Hell, his fighting capabilities are so legendary that they're even spoken about across time and space up in both Olympus and Asgard. He's a better martial artist than Yukio, who's skill "defy description", his instincts and reflexes are refined to the point where they're faster than his own thoughts, and he's mastered numerous martial arts, such as:
Boxing
It can't be a shocker that the guy with the strongest metal on the planet inside of his fists knows how to throw a mean punch. Fun fact, boxing has actually been big in Canada since at least 1867, so it's likely that Logan began trying out the sport when he was young, which makes sense. Boxing is in many ways a sport reliant on the lightning bruiser archetype: strength and speed combined together in order to take foes outwith extra fast and powerful blows.
Ninjutsu (& stealth in general)
In real life, Wolverine's are considered extremely stealthy and difficult to spot, sometimes being called the "phantoms of the forest", so it's fitting that Logan knows his fair share of stealth knowledge as well, being good enough to teach classes on it. He can completely vanish from foes having a direct line of sight on him, suddenly appear in a group of people without having been seen, and even sneak around his fellow superhuman super-sense teammates. Even Tony Stark's Iron Man armours can't detect him before a suprise attack. He's infiltrated everything from private mobster apartments, mafia clans, supervillian liars, the Avengers tower, and... yeah, you get the picture.
He was taught a lot of this by Black Widow's dad. Probably important.
Karate
The most standard martial art you can get. Logan has trained karate (not a strange thing for Canadians apparently), which unlike many of its sister martial arts is actually mainly about power. There's a reason the karate chop is so famous after all, and someone practiced with the sport is capable of delivering all kinds of forceful strikes and throws.
Kung Fu
Everyone was doing it, so Logan figured he might as well. Probably one of the most famous martial arts of all times, Kung Fu isn't just about hitting people, but it's an entire way of life. Study, practice, learning, it all comes together into something more than fighting, but a style of focus and commitment and having atunement with your inner self.
Now, of course, it does also involve hitting people. See the example above.
Muay Thai
Muay Thai is a, well, Thai martial art also known as the "Art of Eight Limbs". This is due to its unique focus of not just hands and feet, but also knees and elbows (two for each arm and leg, and thus eight limbs in total. Fun!). This offers generally more variety than most types of fighting styles, as well as training in moves that would be considered dirty in them.
Krav Maga
Krav Maga is like the ultimate big daddy od fighting styles, made from a combination of boxing, Judo, wrestling, and more, it aims to take the best from all of them and mush it all together into one style. And boy, if that isn't the reason it's so popular. After all, why restrict yourself to one teaching when you can get them all?
Another fun tidbit about Krav Maga is that it's one of the few fighting styles where most of the time, the main goal of learning it is for offensive purposes. While it's seen usage in the armed forces, it's more popular for... well, murder. So yeah. Fun.
Pressure Point Knowledge
Wolverine is also trained in utilising his opponents pressure points against them, a technique taught to him by Master Po (not the panda). Po taught Logan how to do things like, say, obliterating boulders with a single precise karate chop, as well as using that same technique against people. He's also been shown to utilise the more standard nerv strike to knock people unconscious or deliver fatal attacks, ala Kenshiro. There are reportedly at least 361 pressure acupoints on the human body, so there's plenty of options for Wolvie to play with.
Swordsmanship
And finally, Wolverine is no slouch with a blade, and I'm not talking about his wrist claws. On multiple occasions, he's shown to be one of the best swordsmen on the planet, capable of taking on some of the most skilled and veteran swordfighters alive, even those who have spent their entire life on the craft (eg. Silver Samurai).
Superhuman Senses
One of Wolverine's most useful mutant abilities is his heightened senses. His smell, touch, hearing, sight (and presumably taste) are all as refined as can be, allowing him to do things like track down targets days after he's picked up their scent, see in the dark to such a degree that it's comparable to broad daylight for him, sniff out targets in a sewer while while he's on a rooftop, dodge suprise attacks while completely blind and unable to smell, and easily combat the likes of suprise attack ks and invisible opponents. Hell, you know you're good when Daredevil of all people thinks you've got a better sense of smell than him. And if you wanna take the above example at face value, even Spider-Man gets jelly of them sometimes.
But of course, they're not perfect. There's plenty of examples of times where his senses have failed him or he's been taken off guard by a wide variety of reasons. Comic book character, remember.
Regeneration
Everybody knows that Wolverine heals good. Good enough to survive having his entire body pierced, his flesh burned, or his heart exploded. He can withstand having his flesh and skin vapourised, and even stroll out of nuclear explosions, only to regenerate back to full fighting condition less than an hour later.
Now, the exact limit of Wolverine's regenerative abilities is... unclear. There will be a segment specifically for it before the verdicts, but if you're looking for a quick answer, it would be the destruction of his brain / removal of his head, having been stated multiple times by both narration and other characters.
Animal Empathy
On the weirder side of Logan's mutant abilities is his power to understand and read the emotions of animals and communicate with them. Has little use in a combat scenario.
Hot Claws
Wolverine has had his fair share of weird powers over the years, but one of the most recurring ones is the "Hot Claws". As the name implies, this superheats Wolverine's claws, drastically boosting their deadliness, something which rises with his anger. However, part of the energy the claws use comes from Logan's healing factor, causing it to act slower when the hot claws are active.
Resistances
- Pressure Points: Pressure point attacks have no effect on him, only making him angrier.
- Biological Manipulation: Was once infected with a virus that attacked his very DNA, only to develop a resistance to it.
- Mental Attacks: Logan's mind is impossible to invade, even for the likes of Emma Frost. At some point, Professor X outfitted him with level 9 PSI-Shields, allowing him to shrug off mind control and telepathy of all kinds. When someone succeeded in shutting his brain off, his body continued to act on feral instinct.
- Diseases: Is totally immune to all diseases, even Spores capable of affecting the likes of the Eternals.
Raiden
Hand to Hand Combat
Although he may be most comfortable with a blade in his hands, Raiden is no stranger to hand to hand combat. While we don't know the exact styles he's trained in, we can make some assumptions given how he was raised in the Liberian military.
There isn't a lot of info about it online, but Liberian soldiers should logically be taught some of the most known martial arts in Africa, those being Dambe and Laamb, mixtures of boxing and wrestling allowing for kicks and punches respectively. This checks out when we compare it to the small h2h segment in Armstrong's boss fight, as well as his famous electric punch barrage delivered on the Senator proper.
Ninjutsu (& stealth in general)
Raiden is a ninja, so you'd expect him too know a thing or two about stealth. He's also a ninja from Metal Gear, so if he didn't he'd honestly be a little pathetic. Luckily for him, he's been trained by the best of the best, from the Liberian Army to Solid "Ultimate Spy" Snake himself.
Being a stealth expertise, Raiden has infiltrated numerous enemy bases all around the world, even those belonging to the likes of Desperado and Solidus Snake. He can ninja around everything from high-tech surveillance laser systems to entire hordes of trained cyborgs. Within less than a second, he is able to vanish from the naked eyed, wether it be via the usage of vents, smoke bombs, convenient objects to hide behind, or, yes, even cardboard boxes.
Kenjutsu
Kenjutsu is the art of Japanese swordsmanship that Raiden, despite being a Liberian raised by Americans, is a huge fan of. Usually practiced with a katana or odachi, Kenjutsu covers a fair bit of different sword techniques, such as Kendo and Iado, varying degrees of distances and parrying. Raiden is nothing else than an expert at the craft, one of, if not the best swordfighters in the world.
Battōjutsu
Battōjutsu meanwhile refers to how a Samurai would utilise their blade specifically for swifter attacks, often directly from the hilt. Through factors like timing, distancing, and targeting, Battojutsu is unlike Kenjutsu, basically exclusively used for murder. While Kenjutsu mimicking Raiden's usual dueling techniques, Battōjutsu closely resembles the way he uses his sword when in Blade Mode.
Iaijutsu
As demonstrated lovely by Sam above, Iaijutsu is the art of the classic Japanese quickdraw technique, where the swordsman draws his blade from a sheathed position to full extension in as short of a timeframe as he can.
Iaijutsu is one of the most recognisable and technical styles in all of Japanese swordfighting. If used correctly, you could potentially end your opponent in one blow, but if that blow whiffs, you've left yourself right open for a swift counterattack. Raiden has also showcased the ability to charge a version of the attack up, which skyrockets the final damage dealt, but has the downside of both a long startup and recovery.
Skills
Metal Gear Rising offers Raiden quite a few skills that he can use in combat. Most of these are either extensions of combos ot basic attacks, but there are a few notable ones as well.
- Parry: By flicking his blade in the direction of an enemy attack at the right time, Raiden can parry their move, opening up for a free counterattack and Blade Mode opportunity.
- Slide Tackle: With momentum gained from running, Raiden slides across the ground while sweeping his leg, knocking enemies over.
- Draw Attack: Raiden sheaths his blade and uses electricity to power it up, before quickly drawing it to unleash a massive attack.
- Heel Drop: In the midst of a combo, Raiden grabs his sword with his foot and swings it down into a heavy slash.
- Thunder Strike: Raiden thrusts his palm forwards, sending out an electric shockwave that sends foes flying.
- Lightning Strike: Raiden preforms an immensely quick short dash, piercing a target with his sword.
- Stormbringer: Raiden grabs his sword with his foot and preforms a spinning handstand, stretching his leg out to damage foes around him.
- Falling Lightning: In mid-air, Raiden targets down and kicks towards an enemy, bouncing off them.
Other skills comsist mainly out of various combos that Raiden can preform with his sword, polearm, sai, or pincer blades. A comprehensive list can be viewed in this video.
Electricity Manipulation
He is lightning. The rain transformed. For such, Raiden can manipulate static electricity for offensive measures, allowing him to blast an entire room of armed guards to death without needing to even raise his arms. When he does feel like raising his arms, he can channel electricity through them to enhance his striking power and speed, or even empower his blade for devastating lighting attacks.
Blade Mode
When Raiden's Fuel Cell Gauge is high enough, he can initiate Blade Mode, a state where his perception of time slows to a halt. With this activated, he can chop apart his targets as swiftly or accurately as he wants, allowing him to slice cleanly through enemy weak spots or sometimes even bypass their defences entirely.
Weakness Deduction
Utilising Blade Mode, Raiden is able to target the weak spots of his enemies, allowing him to kill them as cleanly and efficiently as possible, often via a single fatal strike. But this doesn't just extend to low-powered grunts, he was able to use this against the likes of Sundowner and Jetstream Sam, disabling the formers shields and knocking the latter's weapon out of his hands. Not even Senator Armstrong's nanomachines were immune from this, which allowed Raiden to cancel his healing process and even ultimately lead to his defeat.
Zandatsu
Zandatsu, or "Cut and Take", is a technique Raiden uses in Blade Mode against enemy cyborgs. By slicing them open, he is able to reach in and grab the Fuel Cells within them, allowing for a quick recharge. A successful Zandatsu fully restores Raiden's health and FCG.
Resistances
- Diseases / Poisons: The Skull Suit offers insulation from the environment, and with it biological warfare. His cyborg body likely has similar protective functions.
- Paralysis: Broke out of Vamp's paralysis.
- Extreme Heat: Can take Metal Gear plasma cannon shots to the face, which burn at over 100 million degrees Celsius (180,000,032 F).
- Pain / Emotional Manipulation: Possesses cyborg pain inhibitors and nanomachines capable of neutralising both pain and emotions.
- Analytical Prediction: Was able to fight Vamp, even tough Vamp can specifically read muscle movement to predict his opponents attacks and actions.
Transformations
Wolverine
Berserker Wolverine State
Logan has a little of a... let's be nice and call it "temperament issue". When in a position where he is consumed by intense pain and anger, Logan enters whats known as the "Berserker Rage", which does about exactly what you'd imagine. In this state, Logan's power reaches its peak, boosting his speed and regeneration while also empowering him the more pain he's in. While most commonly depicted as Logan reverting to his Weapon X persona, He's also been shown to enter the form willingly when needed.
Unfortunately, it also comes with the downsides that you would expect. Berserker Wolverine is far from a skilled martial artist or expert tactician, appearing more akin to a feral animal. The form also only lasts as long as Logan' anger does, meaning it will eventually wittle out... albeit, most likely only once his would be opponent has been torn to shreds.
Raiden
Jack the Ripper Mode
Calling Raiden traumatised would be an understatement, and by deactivating his pain inhibitors, he can force himself to relive this trauma, which boosted with his anger and pain causes him to enter the dreaded Ripper Mode. A 10x multiplier in strength and speed, Ripper Mode represents who Raiden was when operating under Solidus' forces, a monstrous killing machine that won't hesitate to kill you, as brutally ferocious as he is skilled and capable.
As you may have anticipated however, it doesn't last for very long. Raiden possesses a limited amount of energy that gets drained by the second when in Ripper Mode. The longest he has used it was when battling Monsoon, a fight that lasted a couple minutes at most. Even though potential items could extend this time limit, it's negative effects of forcing Raiden through his worst state of mind isn't to be ignored.
Support
Wolverine
(Logan usually lacks any support in combat)
Raiden
Blade Wolf
Who could have expected Raiden to be a dog person? Originally an InterFace Prototype LQ-41i, and now a designated "good boy", Blade Wolf was one of many canine units deployed by Desperado before Raiden hacked it into pieces. However, he differed from his robotic brethren due to his advanced AI desiring only one thing: Freedom. Following a rebuilding, remodeling, and reprogramming, he was granted just that as Raiden's companion, coming with him on his missions as a scouting unit and backup helper.
Maverick Security inc.
Following the defeat of the Sons of the Patriots, many surviving members were left without a purpose, and that's where one Boris Vyachslavovich Popov (try saying that five times fast) came to the rescue, forming MSC in order to aid lesser nations and fight for what they believe is right. Raiden is able to call in any of them on his Codec at any time, and they all have their own ways of helping him.
However, most majorly is Wilhelm Voigt, better known simply as "Doktor", a cybernetics engineering master hired into the firm. Not only is he the one who designed Raiden's ultra powerful cyborg body, but is also all around one of the most knowledgeable people on the globe a quick call to Doktor should be more than enough for Raiden to get around whatever issues he's currently having.
Sunny Emmerich
The adoptive daughter of everyone's favourite Otauko: Hal "Otacon" Emmerich, Sunny is nothing less than a child prodigy and key scientist of the Solis Space & Aeronautics space flight development company. She is yet another person that Raiden is able to call on his Codec, possessing a lot of knowledge on engineering and and technology, very useful in the right circumstances.

Scaling
Wolverine
The X-Men
Wolverine isn't just an X-Man, he's the X-Man (sorry, Scott), and is frequently cited as one of their most powerful members. Disregarding those capable of blatantly cosmic feats, it's safe to say Logan is more than comparable to his teammates.
- Cyclops redirected his Optic Blast in a nanosecond.
- Nightcrawler can dodge lightning from Dracula, which is a hilarious sentence.
- Beats leapt several quarter miles in seconds. (Mach 29 - Mach 59)
- Gambit's explosive playing cards can create large craters, cause massive explosions, and blow up nuclear towers.
Misc. Street Tiers
Same as the first. Wolverine is one of the deadliest street-tier heroes that Marvel has in their catalogue, and he's fought with the best of the best like Captain America, Moon Knight, and Hawkeye many times. Even deadly characters like Luke Cage, Venom, and Iron Fist have trouble fighting on par with Logan at times.
- Captain America can hit with the force of a 5 ton meteor.
- Daredevil was able to perceive time and react to it within a nanosecond. (5.6 c)
- Moon Knight moved in tandem with a beam of light. (0.4 c)
- Elektra kicked a sniper bullet out of the air. (Mach 8)
- Deadpool has withstood all sorts of explosions, including one that launched him out of Krakoa. (30 Kilotons of TNT)
- Hawkeye and Black Panther dodged a falling girder in a microsecond. (0.01 c)
- Iron Fist absorbed an electric charge capable of making Hiroshima "look like a sparkler". (50 - 150 Megatons of TNT)
Spider-Man
Oh for fucks sake-
Right, okay, Spider-Man. They fought a few times, Logan has taken hits from him, damages him, all of that stuff. He probably scales. Don't make me talk about him again.
- Held up the Daily Bugle.
- Was once struck with enough electromagnetic energy to destroy a city. (10 Megatons of TNT)
- Took a blast from a weapon capable of outputting an exajoule of energy. (239 Megatons of TNT)
- Regularly tussles with and dodges attacks from Lightmaster. (Lightspeed, in case it wasn't obvious)
- Naturally fights against and defeats his rouges gallery like every day, sometimes even when they team up against him.
- Elektro could power a city-destroying Quantum Particle engine. (316 Megatons of TNT)
- Sandman can dodge lightning (Mach 1458 - 2.3% c) and lasers (30% c), and withstood a massive explosion (232 Kilotons of TNT).
- Carnage survived smothering and containing Apocalypse's Gene Bomb. (1.8 Gigatons of TNT)
- Can likely scale and compare to other Spidey-people from across the Spider-Verse.
- Spider-Verse Miles withstood being within the Supercollider when it exploded. (222 Tons of TNT)
- Insomniac Peter defeated Sandman, who created a massive sandstorm (15 Kilotons of TNT) and could move at massive speeds when enlarged (1.6 Kilotons of TNT).
- Insomniac Miles survived absorbing the energy of a reactor capable of destroying all of Harlem. (55 Megatons of TNT)
- Spider-Man 2099 is capable of snaring up mid-flight missiles, and once caught Mjolnir at Mach 2000 speeds.
- MCU Spider-Man could harm Thanos and dodge meteors (Mach 177).
- 90's Spider-Man defeated Lizard, who lifted a FUCKING MOUNTAIN... (0.17 tons of TNT)
- Electric Company Spider-Man can harm Doctor Doom, who's survived the destruction of the Star Jaws (8.9 Kilotons of TNT)
- MvC Spider-Man defeated GALACTUS, WHO EATS PLANETS-
I'm never doing another blog where i have to talk about this guy again
Raiden
Solid Snake
At first, Snake was considered the better soldier of the two, but as their lives went on, Raiden became a super-outfitted cyborg ninja, while Snake... um... died. Whatever, you get the idea. At his current peak of cybernetics, Raiden is way, waaaaay stronger and faster than Snake could ever have wished to be.
- Dodged a railgun shot as an old man. (Mach 30)
- Can move in time with an infrared laser (0.9 c), and even throw a punch in tandem with it (1.3 c).
- Endured walking through a hallway of microwaves capable of disintegrating a normal human.
- Comparable to Revolver Ocelot, who can dodge bolts of electricity. (Mach 17.3)
- Comparable to Big Boss, who defeated Volgin. Volgin's body contains an electric charge of 10 million volts. (23.55 Tons of TNT)
Desperado LLC.
Easy scaling to prove. Raiden fought all of them one after the other in the span of a few days (even taking on duplicates of Monsoon and Mistral at the same time), and whopped all of their asses no sweat.
- Blade Wolf sawed through a whole ass brick hallway.
- Jetstream Sam can easily avoid and deflect automatic turret fire, survived a gasoline train cart exploding beneath him, easily sliced the Metal Gear RAY in half, and outsped Armstrong's nanomachines.
- Mistral can break through and dislodge giant metal pipes.
- Monsoon can electromagnetically lift and throw helicopters, a massive wheel of vehicles, and giant stone monuments.
- Sundowner took an explosing helicopter to the face and can jump like.... REALLY good.
Senator Armstrong
Although Armstrong appeared to be much more powerful than Raiden, to the point where Doktor claimed he could easily kill him, Raiden pushed through and took all of his beatings, matched his strength, and put the end to politics once and for all. While he's unlikely to scale to Armstrong's theoretical max strength... we never actually get to see this supposed peak of power, so... cool!
- Obliterated the remnants of the Metal Gear EXCELSUS with one punch. (121 Kilotons of TNT)
- Lifted dozens of military vehicles from ground level to the top of a skyscraper.
- Punched the ground hard enough to erupt multiple magma pillars instantly. (1,522 Gigatons - 55 Exatons of TNT) (lol)
- Way stronger and more durable than the Metal Gear EXCELSUS, which created a massive crater in the ground.
- Made the mother of all omelettes (but he couldn't fret over every egg)
Weaknesses
Wolverine
Writing a paragraph like this for the goddamn Wolverine is pretty difficult, but even someone like him has his fair share of weak spots. Getting the obvious out of the way first, there's that temperament issue already mentioned. While Logan is absolutely more deadly when angry, he is also uncontrollable, even by himself. Berserker Wolverine is far from a skilled combatant, after all. When when in normal combat, Logan isn't exactly the best at dodging attacks, because why would he? His crazy healing factor will patch him up anyways. But this doesn't make him immune to pain, far from it, and as a human, he has a set limit of how much pain his body can handle at a time before giving in.
Additionally, the adamantium may seem like the perfect defence, but it's not unbeatable. Magneto has manipulated it magnetically, and certain characters could get through it with mystical or specific means. It also doesn't cover everything, really only keeping his brain safe, which leaves the rest of his body open to damage. Plus, if the tendons in his knuckles are damaged, he won't be able to unsheath his claws until they regenerate.
Lastly but definitely not leastly, that healing factor. While immensely difficult to get through, there are ways to kill this guy, including but not limited to brain destruction, metal poisoning, complete incineration, and reality warping. This has its own VERY detailed section before the verdicts, so go there for more detailed information.
Raiden
(WHY? DIDNT? YOU? PARRY?)
For as skilled and powerful as he is, Raiden is far from perfect. He's got his fair share of baggage to deal with, and this underlying trauma often comes up when he least wishes for it to, even when he embraces it as Jack the Ripper, it's not something Raiden enjoys reliving, and it has a serious effect on his psyche.
He also has the downsides that comes with being a cyborg, such as blood that cannot be easily replenished and a limited amount of FC energy that can (without items) only be regained from enemy cyborgs or his limited supply of electrolytes. The same can be said for his health, as once he runs out of nanopaste, he'll rely on outside help to heal.
And finally, while he's more than capable without it, Raiden is at a serious disadvantage if he loses his sword. Without an HF blade at his side, he won't be helpless, but he'll definitely be in an uncomfortable position.

Raiden's Speed Multipliers
Now lets talk about something a little more substantial. Raiden is a pretty fast boy, yeah? Well, exactly how fast is a little difficult to say, and Metal Gears numerous very varying speed feats don't really help either.
But okay, let's take a look at what we know for certain. When activating Blade Mode, Raiden's perception of time will slow down drastically. If he just uses it whenever, it will slow down by 50%, but if he uses it after weakening his target, it will slow down to a mere 10%. This is a speed multiplier of 2 to 10 times. As a fun tidbit, if Raiden is in Ripper Mode, he will gain the 10 times multiplier by default, no weakening necessary.
Q: Is the slow motion just for Raiden's perception? If so, it shouldn't increase his actual movement and attack speed.
Good catch, but no, it's not just his perception that increases.
An easy way to explain this is like this: Raiden can not slow down time itself, he can only witness it in slow motion. From his point of view, enemies and targets are slowed down, but he is not. To everyone else, time moves in normal pace, and Raiden is sped up. Makes sense?
Q: Loka, what about the raindrops?
My my, you're quite vigilant today, huh?
Right, the raindrop feat. I mentioned it in his speed section, but Raiden has this funny little feat in his battle with Monsoon where upon activating Blade Mode within Ripper Mode, time halts around him to such a degree that he views raindrops as frozen in mid-air. It should be self-explanitory that a simple 2 to 10 times speed increase could not produce a result like this, suggesting a potential level of speed for Raiden far above what we know.
But I have no fucking way of calcing that. I am by no means an expert at this stuff, and even then I feel like that feat is the beginning of getting tinfoilery with stats and assumptions, especially with what Raiden would be able to whip out in any random one on one match. For now, just keep in mind that he's likely faster than this.
Anyhow, let's take another look at some of his feats with our new established mutlipliers in mind.
- Railgun dodge: Mach 229
- 2x multiplier: Mach 458
- 10x multiplier: Mach 2290
- Missile jumping: Mach 7855
- 2x multiplier: Mach 15,710
- 10x multiplier Mach 78,550 / 0.08 c
- Snake's laser dodge: 0.9 c
- 2x multiplier: 1.8 c
- 10x multiplier 9 c
- Snake's laser punch: 1.3 c
- 2x multiplier: 2.6 c
- 10x multiplier 13 c
(The raindrop feat itself can't be multiplied since it already uses both Blade and Ripper Mode)
I'm imagining this section will be a little nebulous for some people, so be sure to make your own opinion on it. I'm just here to put all information on the table.
My opinion? I think they're fine. Raiden should already massively upscale from Snake to a ridiculous degree, especially by the end of Rising. It is a little outlandish of a feat, but it is also Metal Gear, far from the weirdest thing in the series. So... yeah, get your own thoughts on that one I guess.
Are HF Blades really durability negation?
I bet quite a few of you were waiting for me to tackle this after the whole spiel I went on about the HF Blades quantum-level cutting prowess, so let's talk about it. Are HF Blades dura negation?
Maybe
So, the main argument against it is "Then, why doesn't Raiden one-shot everything?" And like, he kind of does? Not in gameplay, obviously, but taking a look at all the cutscenes in Revengeance, when Raiden uses his sword on someone or something, it usually results in that thing getting chopped up (this is even the case when used by standard goons or upon vehicles that require multiple hits to destroy in gameplay). Most of the boss-level characters like Sundowner, we know have nanomachines that aid in healing, so that could be a possible explanation as to why he doesn't insta-kill them, which also goes to explain in return why they don't one-shot Raiden as well.
But then there's Armstrong, who in a cutscene, grabs Raiden's sword, and snaps it. This is thanks to Armstrong's nanomachines, which in his words "harden", implying that it's thanks to their sheer defence that he can block the sword. Raiden finishes him off with the Murasama, but you'd think it wouldn't matter if the original sword could slice quantums apart, right?
Well... I don't know? When Doktor witnesses Armstrong do this, he claims that it defies "every core tenet of modern physics". And you know, Doktor should logically know his stuff, so... I guess... Armstrong can just do that because he's him? Its not necessarily an anti-feat for the HF Blades cutting ability as much as it's a feat for Armstrong himself, as odd as it seems.
Q: Can we take Kevin's words on the quantum thing?
So, Kevin does indeed state that he doesn't understand all the details of how the HF Blades work, but it think it's pretty obvious that he's more referring to the inner workings of the weapons, not the actual effects they cause. Its like how I can't describe how a rocket launcher is designed, but I can tell you that it does indeed launch rockets.
Kevin very likely wouldn't share information that he doesn't fully understand with Raiden (his very close friend) when it could jeopardise the entire mission they're trying to complete. Especially when said mission includes the PREVENTION OF WORLDWIDE WAR. Even if he did, it would be odd for him to specifically state he doesn't understand one part while also sharing a part he doesn't understand, you get me?
tldr; HF Blades are probably durability negation
is Wolverine a Herald?
Let's get this over with.
Short answer, yes and no.
Long answer, Wolverine has on MANY occasions battled against herald level characters and held his own, taking hits from them and dealing his own back. However, it is very explicitly clear that this is because of his adamantium skeleton and claws. Marvel is way more comfortable with portraying Wolverine as a street tier character, albeit one on the higher echelon of that level.
His AP and the durability of his skeleton is certainly herald level, but his physical power and survivability isn't quite.
How do you kill Wolverine?
Alright, we had to talk about it at some point. Like I mentioned in his weakness section, this was, quite easily may I add, the most difficult part of making this blog. Wolverine is a character that is defined by his sheer and utter unkillability, so let's go through every aspect of it one by one.
1. WOLVERINE'S NUKE FEATS
FEAT ONE:
Let's tackle that is likely to be his best feat of immortality first, the time he was nuked and vaporised down to nothing but his adamantium skeleton, yet lived.
Or did he?
Well, yes obviously, but theres more to it. Let's take a look at this feat in detail. It occurred in Wolverine vol. 3 #43, where Logan was hunting after the mutant known as Nitro, who's ability is to cause massive nitrogen explosions, who would have figured. (Full feat here, around halways through the issue)
If you simply read over the events, it looks pretty cut and dry. Logan gets fried down to his metal bones, and then heals back good as new almost immediately. However, there's a wrinkle in there.
The timeframe.
Immediately after getting vaporised, Logan's narration (his thoughts) states that he doesn't feel anything, potentially meaning he loses consciousness there. After this, Nitro views his skeleton, and then makes a call to his employer, after which (seemingly), Logan is back perfectly healed.
However, we know for a fact that the next issue (taking place immediately following these events), happens at 8:22 AM PST, whereas the ambush on Nitro's cabin appears to happen mid-day. This implies that there's potentially a longer time gap than implied, either before or after Nitro makes his phonecall.
Now, if that doesn't do it for you, here's the more solid proof. Five issues later in Wolverine vol. 3 #48, Logan recounts the events immediately following Nitro's blast. We see there that both Nitro and Logan were actually knocked out by the explosion (again, middle of the issue), with Logan even having a whole vision of the afterlife (it's a little unclear if he was actually sent there, but that's not important).
Once Logan wakes up, he explicitly states that he has to wait for his healing factor to regenerate him cell by cell, and organ by organ. He even states as plain as possible that the nervous system takes "a long time" to heal.
So, yes. Logan did survive and regenerate from Nitro's self-detonation, seemingly just from his bones (in my opinion, unlikely. We dont ever get a look inside of his skull during this feat, so its likely the adamantium at least somewhat protected his brain from being destroyed), but it took a long time, possibly up to an hour if you look at the time of date, as well as his vision of the afterlife.
FEAT TWO:
Logan survived the nuke dropped on Hiroshima, you know, every VS debaters favourite metric of comparison.
This one is pretty straightforward. While it may look like he is in the process of being incinerated in the wide shot of the explosion, his appearance there and immediately following it are a complete match. The nuke simply charred off his flesh and skin, leaving most of his body intact.
Q: Loka, what about the Angel of Death deal?
Ah, yes, the fabled divine intervention plotline. A lot of people will try to use this to disprove any feat of Wolverine's immortality, especially the Nitro one, but I don't agree with it.
In case you're unfamiliar, Wolverine for a while supposedly had a deal with the angel of death, Lazaer, where every time Logan took a fatal injury, he would battle Lazaer in the afterlife for a chance to return to life.
However, writers quickly backpedaled on this bcause, well... they're realised it was stupid. Logan gave up the deal for a piece of his soul, and the Lazaer deal was no more. In the grand scheme of things, it didn't really matter anyways, Logan's healing factor remained the same before and after the deal, and he continued to have better feats of regeneration after this.
2. OVERTAXING THE HEALING FACTOR
Should you find yourself in a debate where one of the characters has prominent regeneration, the term "overtax the healing factor" will inevitably come up. Overtaxing is most often a term defined as overwhelming the healing factor at a faster rate than it can regenerate the body (For instance, complete incineration on characters like Deathstroke, Carnage and Ryūko Matoi).
Overtaxing Wolverine's healing factor specifically is an interesting topic. Like we've established, he can be slain via the destruction of his brain, and can regenerate anything else from his cells to his nervous system.
One time, Wolverine went on a rampage against the X-Men, who were aided by Doctor Nemesis and Fantomex. Nemesis shit Logan with a special bullet containing the bubonic plague, mouth cancer, and a flesh-eating bacteria (yikes), which severely debilitates him. Then, they began to riddle him with bullets, which Nemesis stated is in order to "short out his healing factor, which they actually succeeded in.
Now, Wolverine survives the ordeal and his healing factor kicks back in soon, but it is explicitly stated that at that point, Cyclops could have killed him.
As you can tell, this scenario required a LOT of specific weapons directly targeting Logan's healing factor with the direct intent to slow it down. However, it still proposes the idea that continued exposure to very repeated damage could potentially overwhelm him, especially considering how he has had no issue adapting to diseases in the past (Although, it is also fair to assume that Nemesis altered these diseases in some way specicially against Logan. It's kind of his thing)
3. SPECIALISED WEAPONRY
We know for a fact that Logan can be slain via the destruction of his brain, but since said brain is protected by an adamantium skull, how do you get through it?
Let's look at a few specialised weapons he has interacted with over the years and compare how they did against him.
MURAMASA
Like mentioned in the segment covering the blade itself, the Muramasa causes wounds on the body that Logan's healing factor cannot patch up. Similarly, when used on a clone of Sabretooth, it was unable to reattach its severed arm.
Unfortunately, we do not have a lot of information about the exact properties of the Muramasa. It is made out of an unknown alloy and was forged with a piece of Logan's soul (not that this is not the reason why it can hurt him as it also worked on the Sabretooth clone and Omega Red), but other than that there is no evident reason behind its cutting ability.
TACHYONS
The mutant called Silver Samurei enhances his weapons with his ability to create tachyon fields, allowing him to slice through "anything", yet his blade is stopped by Wolverine's skeleton. The two have fought many times, often with similar results.
While likely just named that because it sounded cool, tachyons are a real life thing... kind of. They're a hypothetical subatomic particle that moves faster than light. Some people claim that this is supposed to explain Silver Samurai's cutting ability as him slicing on the subatomic level.
However, not only did it fail against the adamantium (which is only durable on the molecular level, not subatomic), he's also clashed with normal swords in the past, so his cutting ability isn't quite on that level.
I think its quite the leap in logic to give the skeleton subatomic durability based simply on an ability name that's never further explained beyond a vague similarity to a particle we don't even know exists. Potentially controversial, I don't know.
CARBONADIUM
Carbonadium is one of Marvel's many super metals, this one a radioactive material that's harder than steel and more flexible than aluminum. Long time Wolverine debaters may recognise this as the metal that Earth-12101 Deadpool (or, "Dreadpool") used to decapitate Logan. While this was an alternate universe version of the character, it's safe to assume this would have a similar effect on him.
We can assume this because Carbonadium weapons have actually shown up in Earth-616, in the form of bullets. When Logan's son was shot with these, they slowed his healing factor down to a point where if they remained in his body, he would die. Logan even confirms this himself.
Note the specific usage of "slowing down" the healing factor instead of, say, "cancelling it". Considering that we known Carbonadium is radioactive, we can figure out how it works. Logan's healing factor regenerates his cells one by one at an accelerated rate, meaning that the Carbonadium is likely simply outputting a fast working radiation that kills the cells at a faster speed than they can reform. This is how lethal radiation doses work in real life through a phenomenon known as apoptosis.
ANTARTIC VIBRANIUM
You may be familiar with this from Wolverine's original run in with Raiden. Mercedes "Misty" Knight is a superheroine with a metal arm composed out of Antarctic Vibranium, a so-called "anti-metal". Misty states and showcases that this metal outputs vibrations that causes the atomic bonds between metals to weaken and liquify, even going out of her way to specify that it includes adamantium.
The way that this anti-metal works isn't entirely understood, but we can theorise. Normal Vibranium alloys, such as Black Panther's suit, works by absorbing kinetic energy, thus it's reasonable to say that the antartic version likely instead repels this energy at a fast pace, causing it to store the energy within its target instead of itself, thus the weakening of molecular bonds. But hey, THATS JUST A THEORY-
4. DOWNING / SUFFOCATING
Hey, good on you for sticking in this far! We're at the home stretch now, so there's just a little more to go through!
Drowning / suffocation / cutting off his oxygen supply / whatever is one of the most common answers you'll get when asking how to kill Wolverine, and yeah, it's a real weakness of his.
Now, don't get it wrong, Wolverine can swim, so it's not as simple as just tossing him in a lake and hoping for the best. Especially considering he can hold his breath for up to 15 minutes while figthing sharks. (the shark thing is oddly consistent)
But if you were able to get Wolverien into a situation where he would lose oxygen, he would dedinitely be trapped. Repeatedly, he has stated that his brain needs oxygen to revive him, and even if he was able to come back, his skeleton would be too heavy for him. Logan also drowned his son, Draken, by overpowering him and forcing his face into a puddle, and Draken has all of Logan's powers.
There are other ways to induce this effects than just water, however. Bury him in sand or gravel, coat him in metal, remove the air from his lings, or just repeatedly slash his throat open and make him drown in his own blood. Of course, almost all of these scenarios require Logan to not be in a fighting condition, but hey, the possibility is there.
tldr; Wolverine can be killed via the overtaxing of his healing factor or destruction of his brain, including the destruction of a majority of his brain cells via drowning, asphyxiation, or very specific weaponry (This extends to severing his brain from the rest of his body). He can regenerate his body from only his skeleton and a few cells, however this knocks him out, potentially temporarily sending him to the afterlife, and takes a long time to regenerate, counting as a "death" via Death Battle's rules.
While very potent and famous for a reason, his supposed immortality isn't really that outlandish compared to many other characters.

Ho-ly-shit
This blog was one hell of a challenge to put together all by myself, but I made it, and I think it resulted in what I can quite comfortably call my best work to date. Wolverine vs Raiden is a matchup that I adore with two characters that I, you guessed it, adore, so when I finished Shadow vs Mewtwo and looked around for more episodes to do rematch blogs for and this one came up... yeah, felt like natural choice. Definitely pushed me to my limits, but it was one hell of a fun experience! What better way to end the year?
Anyhow, let's talk debate. A lot has changed for these two in terms of VS stats over the years, so let's cover each category one by one, beginning with strength and durability.
Raiden holds a fairly obvious physical advantage over Logan, being capable of tossing around things weighing several hundreds of thousands times heavier than anything Wolverine has pulled off.
Hell, if we look at their most consistent levels of strength and durability, Armstrong's punch gets to over 7 times higher than the Hiroshima nuke that Wolverine barely withstood, and comparing their higher numbers, the Monsoon APC feat gets almost as high as Iron Fist's best potential strength, which is almost definitely higher than what Logan can dish out.
Speed is... an interesting story. Both get reliably to a couple times FTL, the Daredevil feat sitting at around 3 times faster than Snake's. But it has to be brought up again that Raiden is a lot, a LOT faster than Snake ever was, likely several dozen times so. And that's without counting in Blade or Ripper Mode.
While Logan reliably upscales from Matt's speed several times, Raiden simply upscales from Snake more. By how much exactly is impossible to tell, but either they're equivalent in speed, or Raiden holds the advantage by a significant amount.
Before we get to the thing that ultimately matters most, let's get some tertiary advantages out of the way. They are both equivalent masters of stealth with ways to counter each other's, Wolverine is a more skilled and experienced combatant while Raiden is a better swordsman, and as far as secondary equipment goes, none of them really makes a big dent into the debate.
Which leaves us with the final comparison; Raiden's High-Frequency swords and Blade Mode vs Logan's adamantium skeleton and healing factor.
You may have picked up on it already from the way I worded it in the blog, but I absolutely believe the HF blades to be capable of durability negation, and their quantum level cutting abilities would certainly be able to slice apart adamantium, even if it may take some effort.
Thanks to Blade Mode, Raiden can target the weakest parts of Logan's skeleton, such as his joints, and sever his limbs. Even apart from that, he can target his eyes and throat, and while those will regenerate quickly, Raiden's Speed advantage allows him to keep attacking. While Wolverine's skeleton can regenerate as well, nothing is stopping Raiden from cutting off Logan's bodyparts and keeping them out of reach from him. In fact, he's pretty damn used to mutilating targets.

To be frank, getting into the gritty of it... I think this one is pretty clear cut. It's not a stomp, God no by any means, and it's easy to say that Wolverine will give Raiden the fight of his life, but Jack simply just has every option he needs to deal with Logan, such as;
- Being able to momentarily stun him with EM grenades and Dystopia
- Keeping track of him at any time via his AR display, Soliton Radar, and Solid Eye
- Being able to call for information at any time via silent Codec calls (assuming a shared universe, his allies would certainly have information on Wolverine and adamantium)
- Targeting exposed weak points like his eyes and throat via Blade Mode
- Targeting exposed weak points like his eyes and throat via Blade Mode
- Overpowering him with his physical strength advantage
- AP stomping his body's durability and blasting his flesh and organs off
- Severing his limbs with Blade Mode's weakness deduction
- Potentially even simply slicing through the adamantium plain and simple
Add on that in their berserker states, Raiden is the only one of the two to not lose his fighting skill and composure, and as the fight goes on, he simply holds the edge in too manor important ares. Especially with the Infinite Wigs ensuring Ripper and Blade Mode will never run out, eliminating any need for resource management.

Wolverine held his advantages and certainly gave Jack a hard time, but in the end, Raiden simply just had the right Gear to X Logan out.
Aussie
Hello again everybody, I have returned from my Bowser VS Eggman-induced slumber to give you my opinion on whether or not Wolverine vs Raiden has a different result now compared to 9 years ago (also just realising now Wolverine vs Raiden came out 9 years ago what the fu-)
Power/Durability
If this category was based solely on physical ability, scaling or not, Raiden would take this fairly easily. Based on their own feats, Raiden's strength is over 6 times stronger than Wolverine's durability (100 Kiloton vs 16 Kilotons), and with scaling, it becomes a ridiculous difference of over 800 times stronger (1,522 Gigatons vs 1.8 Gigatons). There is more to it, but we'll get to that later, so for the moment, Raiden wins the day.
Speed/Reactions
Meanwhile for speed, it's actually a lot closer than you'd think it'd be for this matchup. While Raiden would be able to react to up to 13 times light speed with Snake scaling and Ripper Mode's 10x multiplier, Wolverine is able to keep up regularly with other street-tiers like Daredevil, who's a nanosecond timer that can react at speed of up to 5.6 times the speed of light. While it's clear that Raiden has the advantage here, remember what I just said, he only got up to that speed thanks to Ripper Mode's multiplier, so while he has higher ends for speed overall, when both are at their base levels, Logan's actually faster on average. Add onto the fact that Wolverine has near-supernatural levels of stealth from both people and machines (the two things that make up Raiden), and that 2.3-times speed advantage becomes less of an impact than you'd think. For the sake of ease, I'd be calling this a draw.
Now, to discuss the metal-coated elephant in the room...
Hax, Misc. and that [completely balanced] skeleton that I hate
This is the thing I chose not to bring up in the power and durability section, because my sweet Lord that adamantium skeleton is the only thing that keeps Logan's back from giving out because of how much it carries him. While still a street-tier, which when you compare other verses to Marvel is nothing to sneeze at, it's thanks to that goddamn skeleton that Logan is able to keep up with some of Marvel's heaviest hitters, such as the planet-destroying Hulk and the spaceship-lifting Thanos. It's with all of these fights that it makes you wonder, "Can Raiden even harm the fucker"? And the answer, at least in my opinion is a "yeah probably."
Logan's skeleton is the only part of his body covered in the material, and he can be stopped if his nerves and muscles are destroyed, which we saw in his fight with Nitro, where everything but his bones and brain were vapourised and he was knocked out for hours. Given that Raiden could easily surpass such a feat with his raw strength as seen in his fights against beings such as Metal Gear RAY and Armstrong, it wouldn't be difficult to remove said parts from Wolverine and keep him unable to fight back in any capacity.
Even if that weren't the case and he were given tools such as the Adamantium Armour, as specified by Loka, the main reason why adamantium is so durable is because of his bonding strength that lies at the atomic level, which while a victory button against anyone else, Raiden's High-Frequency Blades cut at the quantum level, which is far smaller than the bonds between atoms that keep otherwise untouchable materials such as adamantium stable and unbroken.
On top of that, for miscellaneous things, while both can increase their natural attributes to their absolute limits with Berserker State and Ripper Mode, only Raiden is capable of maintaining a higher-level of sanity with his transformation, which makes a lot of Logan's tertiary advantages such as experience and skill invalid due to devolving into a rabid beast. At the very least though, Logan's healing is a lot more reliable and efficient than Raiden's options, and one strike is all that's potentially needed to end the fight.
Conclusion
So after everything that has been discussed by me, it's my belief that Raiden is the one who will win the day, just as it was almost a decade ago. Those speeds are fairly even and Logan has ways of ending the fight in a flash, Raiden's far greater strength, atom-destabilising weapons and maintained sanity help The Ripper get the win against The Best There Is. Raiden is simply a cut about the rest.

If this war is all I am and this war never ends, am I immortal?
Always a pleasure to give Loka a hand when they get in way over their head on something. I'll try to keep this brief, blog's long enough as is.
I'll be giving my vote to Wolverine, though it's far from the cleanest win and Raiden is going to make it a hard fought victory.
Stealth is hardly going to be a big deal in this fight. Both are greatly skilled in that field, but between Logan's super senses and Raiden's Soliton Radar, neither is going to be catching the other by surprise much if at all.
Both of them have similar levels of speed, reaching FTL. Daredevil's feat is better than Snake's, but Blade Mode helps close even that gap. This is a problem, because while both have similar levels of power, both can win the fight with only a few attacks, so speed matters.
Logan is a lot more experienced in combat which should be obvious? Being HUNDREDS of years old and fighting in multiple World Wars makes a pretty clear gap. And while Raiden is a very very skilled combatant, so is Logan. Even if you could argue that Raiden could match Logan's skill (he probably can't), this is what Logan does every day.
But let's not act like Raiden is completely outmatched here. I personally believe that the High Frequency Blades can negate durability, and after checking through Loka's research, I'm not entirely convinced they wouldn't work on Adamantium? I think it's a fair argument to say that it would take a good amount of swings to break that skeleton down, but it CAN be done, and I fully believe Raiden can do it, especially with their similar speeds.
However, Logan can take Raiden out just as easily. Which shouldn't be much of a surprise, really. When your claws can cut through THE INCREDIBLE HULK, Raiden going down quick is pretty expected. But hey, Raiden's got plenty of healing options and a good long-range kit to keep Logan at bay. But on the other hand, most of Raiden's weapons aren't doing much damage other than his close-range kit and Logan's healing factor is just way better, so stalling Logan out isn't super reliable for him imo. All that without taking that FUCKING adamantium armor into account, giving Logan a second layer of defense that would make Raiden's struggle even greater.
A lot of this matchup is really up to interpretation which can be pretty frustrating, but this is just what I happen to personally believe. One of the only times you'll see this in VS, but Logan's ridiculous skill allows him to edge out in this super close fight and make Jack R.I.P.
Second time's the charm, better late than never, yadda yadda WOLVERINEEEEEEEEE
See you guys next time!

Wish I could say I’ve got tons to say here, but I wrote a short story for my last verdict. We're hitting the high notes and jumping to the verdict. Banger matchup though.
Hitting the basics on stats and what I buy first, Logan’s getting herald bones, but his usual street stats. He’s one hell of a tough bastard, but his adamantium’s doing the heaviest lifting. That still puts him around Raiden’s level while still packing steel. Let’s blaze down the stat standings! Strength goes tidily to Raiden, his RAY slicing and Armstrong scaling beat out steel smashing and multi-ton meteors. Base speed seems to be a close race, Daredevil scaling trumping Raiden’s scaling to Snake. But breaking out Ripper mode, a feat which I comfortably buy, dwarfs the gap. Logan wins some point’s back in durability though. His base body still lags a bit behind with less kilotons being taken compared to Raiden, but that skeleton is toughing it out. Taking hits from heralds and scarring them right back. Which quickly overturns any defense Raiden has when he can get cleaved so thoroughly. Similarly, standard slices from Raiden won’t even dent Logan’s skeleton. But Raiden still has that speed advantage on-hand and a perfect tool to counter that pesky metal. His HF blades being able to slice at quantum levels can be just what Raiden needs to circumvent the adamantium defense entirely and slice through Logan like butter. But for the sake of the debate, and this being shaky in a lot of other people’s eyes, let’s talk about the other ways Raiden can bag a win, and other important details to mention.
Tackling how to bypass regen, Raiden has a few ways. Given his speed advantage, he can easily take pokes at Logan’s squishier body parts. Lungs, eyes, and his tendons are open enough that some precise stabs can weaken him a ton. Keep his lungs full of holes and throat bleeding blood and suffocation is plausible. His electromagnetic grenades and Dystopia can also turn adamantium against Logan, stunning the eXposed-Man. And there’s no chance the Ripper boost is dropping to let Logan try and match speed again. Infinite wig. These advantages aren’t to say Logan is helpless. He’s far more experienced in terms of time and opponents, his senses and regen are still a pain in Raiden’s neck, and those blades of his can still cut the cyborg in half with no effort. One bad slip up from Raiden is all Logan needs. The Solid Eye supports though should be plenty to help keep Raiden aware, especially when Berserker form wears out and wears down Logan in the process. And this is all ignoring the potential of the HF Blades cleaving Logan’s adamantium like nothing, still very possible.
Wolverine is still incredibly power, able to split Jack with ease and with the experience to do so. But Raiden is just too fast, too strong and too strapped, wielding everything he needs to say bye bye bye to Ex-out the legend.
I made this in like three hours
Gman
Last blog of the year, woohoo!!!!
I'm going to start this off with strength, and since Wolverine is a weirdo, I'm gonna divide it into two categories. Wolverine the man, and Wolverine the skeleton. Let's do this
In terms of strength, without scaling I should add, Wolverine was able to break through shackles made of, quote "the hardest steel money can buy", as well as throw Omega Red over his shoulder, who weighs 425 lbs. While impressive, those pale in comparison to Raiden, who was able to halt the Outer Heaven battleship. With one arm. This isn't even taking into account how many Metal Gears he's thrown like oh my God those things weigh way more than Omega Red. Raiden definitely out stats Wolverine the man. But what about his skeleton? Those claws can rip through the likes of The Hulk, Gladiator, and even Thor, and those guys are way tougher than Raiden.
Scaling makes this more complicated however. Scaling to his fellow X-Men, Wolverine can fight Gambit, who's cards can explode nuclear towers. Scaling to other street tiers, Iron Fist once absorbed enough electricity to "make Hiroshima look like a sparkler", and Deadpool once survived an explosion that launched him out of the island Krakoa. Wolverine is naturally much tougher than either of them. Raiden meanwhile scales to Solid Snake, Desperado, and Senator Armstrong, who (gonna section these off for organizations sake)
- Is comparable to Big Boss, who defeated Volgin, who's body contains an electric charge of 10 million volts (Snake)
- Survived a gasoline train cart exploding beneath him (Sam), threw a giant stone monument with electromagnetism (Monsoon), and took an exploding helicopter to the face (Sundowner)
- Punched the ground hard enough to make magma pillers instantly erupt (Armstrong)
What I'm getting at is Raiden mogs Wolverine in a fist fight, but Wolverine could just as easily cut those fists off, so uh...
Tie. Sure.
Now let's cover durability. Again, separating Wolverine from his skeleton.
Wolverine was able to survive being electrocuted by Ragnarok, an evil robotic clone of Thor. Now, seeing as his bones are coated in metal, this should've been even more fatal than being struck by lightning usually is, but no, he still lived, and even took a hammer strike afterwards! At another point in Wolverine's life, he got kicked from New York to Georgia by Gorgon of the Attilan Royal family. Raiden meanwhile, took a beatdown from Senator Armstrong, who was able to total what was left of Metal Gear EXCELSUS, which should just, get way more than Gorgon kicking Wolverine. Anyways THE Hulk was unable to tear apart Wolverine's skeleton so...yeah idk how to really call this. T...tie????
Okay now for the most important stat in this matchup, speed.
Wolverine was able to dodge Cyclops' optic blasts, which as I know from a previous Marvel blog, are lightspeed. Raiden in comparison, was able to jump across missiles while they were being fired, and in terms of attack speed, was able to swing his sword dozens of times while time was effectively frozen. Scaling Wolverine to his fellow X-Men, he should be comparable to Nightcrawler, who could dodge lightning fired from Dracula (it IS a hilarious sentence!), and should be comparable to Beast, who was able to leap several quarter miles in seconds. Scaling Wolverine to Daredevil and Moon Knight, he should be faster. Daredevil was able to perceive time and react within a nanosecond, and Moon Knight moved in tandem with a beam of light. Scaling Raiden to Solid Snake, he should be upscaling him moving in time with an infrared laser, and throwing a punch in tandem with laser. Judging by the numbers I'm being given, Daredevil's feat should be faster, and as such, Wolverine should be faster as well.
Tertiary advantages time!
Raiden has versatility for days just by virtue of having more weaponry, is a better swordsman, Ripper mode is a better stat boost than Berserker Rage, he can track Wolverine's movements, and has magnetic weaponry which can help mess up Wolverine seeing as he has metal coated bones. Wolverine in comparison has experience for...well centuries because he's OLD and because he fights robots, swordsmen with swords that can cut through anything, and ninjas a lot, His nose (it knows) should negate any of Raiden's stealth attempts, he's MUCH better at H2H if it comes down to that, and has a better healing factor.
While Raiden has more tertiary advantages, Wolverine's are by no means made lesser as a result. As such, I'm giving this category a tie.
This is probably THE closest matchup I've written a verdict for since Shadow vs Mewtwo. While Raiden will be a very hard opponent to put down, I think Wolverine, with his superior speed, centuries of experience, and the sheer bullshit that is adamantium coated claws, should be able to Jack the rip Raiden to pieces.
The winner is Wolverine

ReplyDeleteThis was a really good blog, easily your best. Great Job to everyone involved.
ReplyDeleteThe fact that Raiden only has the speed advantage over Wolverine if you abuse multipliers and apply them to a feat Raiden didn't even perform just kind of highlights why the arguments for Raiden winning just aren't very good, if I'm being honest. And that's not even considering the fact that those multipliers aren't even official either.
ReplyDeleteAlso, the Armstrong feat you brought up:
"Punched the ground hard enough to erupt multiple magma pillars instantly. (1,522 Gigatons - 55 Exatons of TNT)"
That would be insanely impressive ... if that's what was actually happening. Armstrong does this technique in the Jetstream Sam DLC during his fight with Sam on a rooftop, meaning he's not actually punching the ground so hard, magma erupts:
https://youtu.be/gRT-ndlz1f0?si=VAwzBNxadf3A_Yfa&t=85
(Ignore the account that uploaded this video for a moment, it was the first video of this DLC fight I looked up where Armstrong actually does the attack)
Hell, getting a good look at it, it doesn't even look like magma if I'm being honest. It looks and is animated more like fire. If anything, we should take it to mean Armstrong has some degree of pyrokinesis, not that he can match the power of literal country-busters.
I am also bit skeptical of scaling Wolverine to Spider-Man, at least in terms of physicality. Spider-Man always seemed physically stronger, but I could be mistaken. (Again, someone might just need to bite the bullet and read every single Earth 616 Wolverine appearance in order to see what's his most consistent strength level)
Oh, also Wolverine's fight with Summoner in the Blightspoke being used as a durability feat is a lot more questionable the more I look at it. I think it's a good survivability feat, but a durability feat? Eh. It's kind of difficult to explain, but there's a huge difference between an "existence" trying to kill a character, and that character having an entire universe blow up in their face.
(Plus I think the consistent Adamantium scaling with Hulk, Thor, etc. is frankly more reliable and straight-forward, and probably even more impressive too considering the kind of universal scaling that could be applied to those characters, even in their most basic versions)
Overall, not the best blog I've read, but there's room for improvement.
"I'm never doing another blog where i have to talk about this guy again"
ReplyDeleteunfortunately, given the sheer amount of team-ups Spidey has done over the years, you will more then likely have to talk about his feats again. LOL
